We recently analyzed Anahuac and will be highlighting a few players again in more depth from this particular match. In addition, we’ll be covering a specific standout player for Buna, another Southeast TX program that hasn’t been covered.
Currently, Anahuac is 5-1 in district with their only loss to Hardin. Buna is now 2-4 and was defeated in 3 sets on Tuesday night in Anahuac’s gym. Below are a few standouts from this match.
Reese Sherman
Reese Sherman
Sherman was an absolute standout for the Buna squad and was involved in almost every play. The most athletic and aggressive pin hitter in the gym, Sherman played with a sense of urgency in every attack. She beautifully executed a variety of shots and tempos, making her the core of Buna’s offense. With an equal amount of swings from left back and outside, she is the first option hitter. Sherman is also the fist server in the team’s lineup, and it’s well understood. Her jump float is just as eye catching as her attacks, and later on, gave Anahuac trouble in serve receive.
Meg Kruezer
Meg Kruezer
Kruezer was mentioned in the first article covering Anahuac, however, her offense deserves a deeper analysis. The tall sophomore particularly stands out for a smaller program. It was refreshing to see her potential pushed by running quicks in front and behind the setter. Even better, Kruezer executed a line shot off a slide in the middle of a rally. Overall, she’s doing a solid job as an underclassman running quicker plays and executing the more challenging shots.
Maylee Willcox
Maylee Willcox
Willcox is a new player being evaluated for Anahuac as she took care of business against Buna. She swings on both pins, but her out-of-system play was especially striking to watch. Even when the setter reversed a ball far off the net, Willcox tracked well and swung with confidence. Her personality is a little more reserved on the court, but maybe that’s her strength; she plays calm and collected in tougher situations.
Makiyah Richardson
Makiyah Richardson
Richardson, a six-rotation middle, was a standout on the net against Buna. Like Kruezer, she was running faster tempos, but her aggressive approach and transition is what earns her praise. Richardson works hard to be available in every transition and adjusts quickly to any volatility in sets rather than lazily tip.
