For this one, though, we’ll also be attaching a few Thursday matches to watch. It’s a good way to look back and look ahead as we hit this crucial late-September stretch of Nebraska high school season.
Here’s the breakdown.
Revisiting Tuesday
As has been the case with most of our Tuesday recaps, several results jump out right away.
At the forefront of Tuesday’s thrillers was Papillion-La Vista South‘s five-set victory over Omaha Westside. This was a back-and-forth affair that featured a Titan rally while down two sets to one at home. Papio South eventually put together a comeback behind a spectacular 26-kill performance from junior outside hitter Lauren Medeck Lauren Medeck 5'10" | OH Papillion-La Vista South | 2024 State #31 Nation NE . We just keep jumbling up the Class A race more and more, and results like this will keep us guessing as we near the postseason.
Elsewhere in Class A, Lincoln East continued its impressive 2022 campaign with a 3-1 win over Fremont. You can draw a lot of parallels between these two teams and the playstyles they put on the court. East and Fremont are stacked with talented ball control players, and some of those players also double as versatile frontcourt hitters.
To complete the Class A triad for this feature, Gretna picked up a momentous road victory with a 3-1 triumph over Millard West. Elle Heckenlively Elle Heckenlively 5'10" | OH Gretna | 2025 State NE lit up the scoreboard with 18 kills on a searing .412 hitting percentage to pace the Dragons to victory. What a statement.
On the small-town front, a few more results catch my eye. Diller-Odell scrapped its way to a couple of 2-1 triangular wins over Lincoln Christian and Lourdes Central Catholic. This improves the Griffins’ overall mark to 10-4 as this talented squad seeks a D2 postseason return.
Norfolk Catholic swept past Columbus Lakeview and Wayne to improve to 12-1 on the season. After we tabbed this team as a preseason championship favorite, the Knights have backed up those expectations.
Lastly, it’s good to see Gothenburg is still on a roll after battling hard at the Harvest Festival Invite it hosted last weekend. The Swedes notched two more wins against Crete and Hastings, further strengthening Gothenburg’s standing as one of the best teams in central Nebraska.
Looking Ahead
Here are a few Thursday matches I’ll be following as the stakes keep rising in the Cornhusker State.
A neighborly Class B matchup is on deck as Elkhorn gets set to host Omaha Skutt Catholic. This match ought to tell us a lot about where these two programs stand as we near the upcoming October grind.
Fremont has a Thursday date with Grand Island. If you’re looking for more high-impact Class A pin hitters, this is a great venue for you.
Keep an eye on some of the Thursday triangulars, too. Overton is hosting an intriguing group that will also feature Amherst and Hi-Line. Lourdes Central Catholic welcomes Falls City and Syracuse in what should be another compelling trio of matchups.
