Ste. Genevieve and Jackson handed the Crusaders the three losses and split with South Iron and Winona. They have the Jackson Tournament this weekend, where they will play Farmington, Kirkwood, Incarnate Word Academy, and Poplar Bluff. Big match with Cape Notre Dame on the 6th and then a rematch with Jefferson on the 18th. The match with Jefferson will preview what’s to come in the state playoffs once both teams win their respective district tournaments. Anna Mueller is a top-notch libero for the Crusaders, keeping them on the right track.
2. Jefferson Blue Jays 22-4-1
Winners of 17 of the last 18 Blue Jays are clicking on all cylinders at the right time. Emma Breier Emma Breier 6'0" | OH Jefferson | 2023 State MO leads the team with 276 kills, and Ava Roth Ava Roth 5'6" | DS/L Jefferson R-7 | 2023 State MO is the team dig leader with 227. A 10/4 battle with St. Pius X and then on 10/18, a rematch with Saxony, who beat Jefferson 2-0 at the Dig for Life Tournament in early September.
3. Hermann Bearcats 16-7
The Bearcats are on an eight-game winning streak, and part of that was winning the Hermann Tournament. Big games on 10/10 with Helias, 10/11 with Pacific, and 10/17 with Borgia still look to be the most challenging games remaining. Holly Heldt Holly Heldt 5'10" | MB Hermann | 2023 State MO leads the attack with 288 kills and leads in digs with 187.
4. Liberty Mountain View Eagles 17-2-1
With the Licking Tournament left to play in and three winnable games in the regular season, the Eagles should be primed and ready to proceed in the postseason. Won last night against Lesterville 3-1. Kenzie Daniels has 167 digs on the year, and Maci Tharp and Lyla Cornman run the offense.
5. Strafford Indians 13-6-1
With some solid wins over Miller and Clever in the last couple of weeks, Strafford is starting to gel at the right time. Sophia Frerking with 154 kills from the middle, and opposite Ashley Suter has 135. Never count them out come playoffs because they are always in the mix, and this year will be no different.
6. Conway Bears 18-4-1
On 10/13, Fair Grove goes to Conway and then a matchup with Licking the next day. Two matches will give them confidence and prepare them for districts or looking for it. Either way, Conway is having another great year, Gibby Beckler Gibby Beckler 6'0" | S Conway | 2023 State MO is again leading the team in kills with 209, and Callie Cornelison has the defense locked in.
7. Lawson Cardinals 16-2
Anna Harrold Anna Harrold 5'10" | OH Lawson | 2023 State MO has 169 kills on the season, and Mary Moore leads with 128 digs and adds 77 kills. Platte County and St. Pius KC are the only defeats for the Cardinals, which are quality teams. The coming battle on the schedule is with Bishop LeBlond, Lathrop, and East Buchanan, who should help prepare them for districts.
8. Clever 18-7-3
Three of six offensive threats for the Blue Jays are sophomores, meaning we could see them in the top 10 for a couple more years. Conway and Liberty have handed Clever two losses, and those teams are ranked above. A matchup with Fair Grove looms the last week of the season, and have them ready to beat Strafford in districts.
9. Bishop LeBlond Eagles 12-5-1
LeBlond started the year 2-3 and looked like I thought the team would look after the graduation loss. The Eagles will get a match with Lawson and Benton next week, and the prep for a return to the final four starts. Sadie Ward Sadie Ward 5'6" | OH Bishop LeBlond | 2023 State MO has 131 kills and 164 digs, and freshman Rilyn Conard leads the team with 138 kills and 150 digs.
10. East Buchanan Bulldogs 18-3-1
The sweep at the hands of LeBlond puts them at 10 in the rankings this week. Maya Watson broke 1000 kills, and Kinzie Woodside has 1300 + digs. Still on the schedule is a match with Lawson and a hopeful rematch with Bishop LeBlond in the district championship.
