High School Featured: Burroughs Burros

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>High school season is in full effect with the last week of league games coming to an end this week. These final games get a team closer to winning their league title. CIF Southern Section preliminaries are the week of October 17-October 29th. Sherman E. Burroughs high school is located in the city of Ridgecrest and they play in the Mojave River League (MRL). Coached by Stephanie Phillips and Gary Beckstorm, their team consists of fourteen players. Their overall record as of now is 19-8 and league play is 6-3. Burroughs is currently ranked #239 in California and #38 in California Division 3 per MaxPreps.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The contribution from each player is what makes a team successful. The Burros played with great energy and the connection between the players was visible on the court. Burros was a great example of "teamwork makes the dream work". There are several hidden gems in Ridgecrest, and Prep Dig likes to showcase all players on all levels. We enjoy recognizing players who are known and unknown. It starts with one player at a time. She is a six-rotation player and a  powerhouse on the court. Her height and vertical give her a huge advantage when it comes to getting on top of a ball and killing it straight down. Manns can deliver a ball down line, cross court, and at the ten-foot line with speed and force. She has the power and ability to get through the block by creating an unstoppable ball. Along with being a strong attacker, Mann can pass, dig and serve. She set hittable balls to her pins and they delivered. She did a good job of finding her hot hitters. Drefs is quick to the ball and her pushout is effortless. Dref ran her team's offense with leadership and responsibility by communicating and making quick decisions to execute plays that score.  She is also a dual athlete with basketball being another sport on her athlete resume. She can quickly transition at the net from the first line of defense to a short-set hitter on offense. She can read the direction of the ball and make precise movements to help her pins cover the block. Stanford was ready to slow the ball down so back row would have a better chance at defending the ball. The further she pressed over the net, the more area on the court was taken away which made it harder for the attackers to score. Her swing can tool the block or bury the ball in the middle back. She has a powerful serve that can get her opponents out of system. Meinert is an aggressive player at the outside position and stayed ready to attack the ball when it came her way, scoring in the u0022Tu0022 or campfire. Her strong jump serve threw the opponent out of system by hitting the top of the tape and falling right over. She didn't hesitate to dive or dig a ball creating an up that would be on target. She can serve receive pass to her setter and also bump set her pins after the second ball. Ponce knows how to get into position to cover the block and is there to pick up any tips. She is quick, showed consistency and is an great ball handler. When she was set, she was able to react and find a spot to place the ball. Higer is aggressive at the net and ready to pound an over pass or joust at the net to score. She is the perfect balance for offence and defense. There were times when she set the ball and other times when she was ready for a set. Her versatility on the court was visible with her ability to hit the ball from the front and back row, digging for quick attacks and setting the ball when the setter needed help.
