Here’s a look at some of the top performers in the match:
Steady is the word that comes to mind watching Berkland perform. Consistent also works. She turns most of what is hit at her into usable passes and quite often they’re right on the money. She moves really well laterally and usually is in position to make plays. I like that she runs the show expertly, directing teammates to the right spots. She also doesn’t step on teammates and trusts in them to make plays when better positioned than her.
Beck has improved a ton since last season, and that’s saying something because she was performing at a high level as a sophomore. She plays a lot taller than the 6-2 at which she’s listed on the roster with long arms and excellent leaping ability. Her coordination and agility for a taller girl help make her a special talent. Wrap all of that up with her being skilled and technically sound, and you understand why Drake gladly accepted her verbal commitment.
Addison Gisleson
Addison Gisleson
Gisleson fits the mold of the newer age player capable of using her versatility to contribute all over the floor. She stands out the most in the back row, where she digs and passes at a high level. She also can hit from the back. She stays on the court through rotations because she’s solid at the net with a strong swing and nice leaping ability to defend the net. She has not come close to reaching her ceiling, which bodes well for the future.
Averie Lower
Averie Lower
One of the better freshmen I’ve seen this season, Lower plays like a veteran on a team of them. She performs well at all positions on the court, defending the back row and delivering sharp passes. Up front, she rises up with a good vertical and precise timing on heavy swings. She sees the floor well and directs hits where she eyes openings. Defensively, her long arms, jumping ability and timing make her a problem at the net. The potential here is immense.
Dakota Whitman
Dakota Whitman
Whitman is what you want in a libero in that she’s filled with energy and strong leadership qualities. In this match, she took a hard shot off the face and played on like nothing happened, helping her team win the point. On top of that, she’s skilled and understands the game at a high level. Whitman could help a lot of colleges and has room to grow as a player.
Marie Gorman
Marie Gorman
Gorman is a very well-rounded player that covers a lot of the court. She stands out more on the back row, but she’s also potent at the net. You can tell she enjoys playing the game. Her energy and hard play rubs off on her teammates. The future is looking up for Gorman, who has a willingness to keep getting better, and she’s already a strong player.
