Continue ReadingIOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa City Liberty punched its ticket to the state tournament for a fourth season in a row with Tuesday night’s 3-0 victory against Cedar Rapids Prairie in a Class 5A Regional Final. I’ve scouted Liberty and Prairie this season but wanted to see both again because both teams are loaded with strong players.
I’m highlighting a few athletes I couldn’t fit into my last reports on these teams. You can read my earlier writeup on Liberty HERE and the one on Prairie HERE.
Gracie Hennings
Gracie Hennings
Hennings is overshadowed by a loaded group of hitters on the Liberty roster but she’s a strong player in her own right. The junior leads the Lightning with 52.0 blocks on the season, which highlights her high level of athleticism and impressive timing. She swings it well and can hit from all three front positions. Liberty loses a lot to graduation after this season, giving Hennings a chance to move out of the shadows in 2023.
Rollins is a player that looks better each time I see her. She’s precise with her sets and delivers the ball where her hitters can make plays. She’s also a good defender. With another season of high school volleyball to go, Rollins could break out in a big way as a senior.
Isabelle Mehmen
Isabelle Mehmen
Mehmen is a steady hand in the back row for a team stocked with talent up front. Receiving pace isn’t a problem for the senior, and she produces solid passes off of her digs. Mehman is an asset from the service line as well.
Lauren Ramspott
Lauren Ramspott
Ramspott lost her sophomore season to a knee injury but has bounced back this fall to help the top-ranked Lightning reach the state tournament for a fourth year in a row. She stands out as an outside hitter but her versatility allows her to help all over the court. She’s getting stronger each match back from the injury, making her one to watch during club and her senior campaign.
McKenna Murray
McKenna Murray
The younger sister of touted NBA rookie Keegan Murray of the Sacramento Kings, McKenna Murray’s best sport also is basketball. That said, she stands out in volleyball as well. She’s a two-way presence at the next, putting her long arms to good use swinging and blocking. Her athleticism is off the charts.
Only a sophomore, Wazac ranked among her team’s leaders in kills this season. She sees the defense well, allowing her to avoid blocks with a full swing or dink when needed. The lefty boasts long arms and leaping ability, which helps her block opponents. She ranked second on her team in blocks. With two years of high school remaining, the future is bright for Wazac.
