Next week Tuesday and Thursday mark the beginning of the one-and-done season, and it should be an exciting one for these young athletes.
#5: South Adams (24-5), v Adams Central in sectional 37 on October 13
The Starfires have been regular attendees in the top five all season, and this week should be no different. Macy Pries (’24, 5-8 OH) is a softball-first kid, but excels on the volleyball court to the tune of 3+k/.200+/3+d per set, and leads the squad in aces to boot. Their first match puts them against a familiar foe in Adams Central (13-12) next Thursday.
#4: Pioneer (25-6), v Lewis-Cass in sectional 36 on October 13
The Panthers, recent winners of the 1A title, have a ton of three-sport talent up and down their roster. I’ve been high on Brooklyn Borges Brooklyn Borges 6'0" | MB Pioneer | 2024 State IN (’24, 6-0 MB), who plays club at Empowered and brings physicality, size and strength to this class that’s not normally seen. Averaging nearly three kills per set while almost hitting .300 and leading the squad in blocks is a great way to supplement this talented roster, and Lewis-Cass (5-20) will have their hands full again next Thursday.
#3: Scecina (23-4), v winner of Irvington Prep/Riverside in sectional 42 on October 13
The Crusaders get a day off before playing the winner of Irvington (3-6) and Riverside (0-7). Scecina should most likely play Triton Central in the sectional final on Saturday, making this one of the rare sectional titles state-wide that will be competitive. I’ve always been a fan of Allison Daves Allison Daves 5'9" | RS Scecina | 2023 State IN (’23, 5-8 RS), a lefty hammer who does a little of everything for the Crusaders. She’s second in blocks and assists, third in digs, and averages an attack line of 3+k/.300+ per set. Well-rounded players always catch our eyes here at PrepDig.
#2: Wapahani (23-5), v Monroe Central in sectional 40 on October 11
A rare Tuesday start for the Raiders in their postseason, Monroe Central (4-18) awaits the match with so many weapons to contend with. Someone has to get the ball to all of the attackers in this well-rounded offense, and the first contact will be key in a long postseason run. Insert Reese Baker Reese Baker 5'4" | DS/L Wapahani | 2023 State IN (’23, 5-4 DS/L, Ball State commit), whose pursuit is second to none and is seemingly always around the ball.
#1: Andrean (23-5), v Lake Station Edison in sectional 33 on October 13
The Fighting 59ers are, once again, the team to beat going into the postseason. Lake Station Edison (7-15) will have their hands full in that first-round matchup, the toughest of which is junior outside Marin Sanchez Marin Sanchez 5'10" | OH Andrean | 2024 State IN (’24, 5-11 OH), whose 3+k/.300+/3+d per set is perfect for a six-rotation passer at the next level.
