The MHSAA State Volleyball Tournament stops for no one and tonight we see some of the top teams in the state go head-to-head. It’s survive and advance and the winners of these matches will have to show a lot of grit to pull out of these ones.
Here are the top showdowns you need to keep your eye on in tonight’s Regional Semi-Finals in Division 2 and Division 3 Volleyball.
LAKEWOOD V MARSHALL
This one will be the battle of the defensive dandies. This match will be very much a story of who can outlast the other. We may see Lakewood and Marshall go the distance or play a seriously intense sweep going one way or the other.
Lakewood is looking to make yet another run to Kellogg as they are very much a part of the power houses of Division 2. They’re led by L Carley Piercefield Carley Piercefield 5'4" | DS/L Lakewood | 2024 State #90 Nation MI who just snagged a record of 2000 career digs in the last few weeks. She won’t be letting a ball drop. Alongside her are setters Skylar Bump Skylar Bump 5'7" | S Lakewood | 2023 MI and Abby Pickard Abby Pickard 5'10" | S Lakewood | 2025 State MI who will play crucial roles in the way this match runs. On the flip side, Marshall has Miss Volleyball nominee, Ella McAllister Ella McAllister 5'4" | DS/L Marshall | 2023 State MI . Alongside Piercefield, she’s one of the best in the position that Michigan has to offer.
Like I said, this could very much be a match that goes either way. Defensively, both teams are superb. But I can see Lakewood having the edge with their championship experience and a lead on Marshall offensively.
MOUNT MORRIS V LAKE FENTON
I wholeheartedly predicted Corunna to continue their upset-minded ways to break through to the regional rounds, but you can never count out the power house of Mount Morris. Morris however will have an uphill battle going against a strong Lake Fenton team.
Mount Morris has a heavier presence of leadership on their team with several seniors. One of the standouts include Blair Wilson Blair Wilson 5'9" | OH Mt. Morris | 2023 State MI on the outside averaging close to four kills per set. Opposing them, Lake Fenton runs with a much more youthful team that includes freshmen OH/S Jillian Ferrill Jillian Ferrill 6'1" | OH Lake Fenton | 2026 State MI and L Abbigayl Sells Abbigayl Sells 5'3" | DS/L Lake Fenton | 2026 State MI . Leading the pack though comes from the opposite, Cola Sisk Cola Sisk 5'10" | RS Lake Fenton | 2023 MI (SVSU). Sisk has a dominating presence on the court and is a great point scorer for the Blue Devils. Her leadership will be a big deal for this young team to prevail.
Despite the youth, I have to go with Lake Fenton in this match up. A little more fire power on their side makes it hard to see them dropping this one.
CASS CITY V VALLEY LUTHERAN
This match will be one of the better ones in this round in Division 3. You got the Red Hawks of Cass City coming in red hot and then you got Valley Lutheran coming in high off of the upset of the defending champs in the district rounds. Lutheran could very much take down the final Greater Thumb West team or they may see their season end in a fast fashion.
For Cass City, they’re well-endowed with some of the top attackers in Division 3. Shelby Ignash Shelby Ignash 6'1" | MB Cass City | 2025 State #124 Nation MI is the dynamite in the middle that has been making quite the name for herself coming off of last season. She’s joined by her partner in crime on the outside, Kacee Gray Kacee Gray 5'7" | OH Cass City | 2025 State MI . The two together make up for one of the best duos you can find. Ignash on the slide is terror to contain and with Gray’s ball control and IQ, it’s a force of nature. For Valley Lutheran, it was the consistency across the board that elevated them over the Rockets in their semifinal upset. Will they be able to bring that to this match up?
I have a hard time seeing Cass City dropping this one. The Hawks are a true contender for the title this season, and at the very least, a strong contender for a semifinal appearance. This match and the regional title are Cass City’s to lose.
