It’s time to check in on the select few sophomore setters who led their teams to this year’s postseason in Lincoln. Like most of the features in our post-championship coverage, there will be setters from all around the map in this one.
The Sophomore Setter Surge
Indeed, the Class of 2025 is well presented at the setter position, including some of Nebraska’s best high school teams.
A pair of dynamic sophomore setters led their teams to postseason appearances in the ever-competitive Class A. Gretna’s Nyah Potthoff Nyah Potthoff 5'8" | S Gretna East | 2025 State NE has emerged as a strong leader at the setter spot in the Dragons’ two-setter system. It’s fitting that a sophomore setter has emerged for Gretna, given all the underclassmen who have recently stepped up for this program. Potthoff could run a 5-1 for the Dragons next season and has plenty more big-match appearances left.
Isabel Campie Isabel Campie 5'7" | S Omaha Marian | 2025 State NE isn’t a stranger to the big stage, either. Omaha Marian’s sophomore setter has been leading the team’s offense since she began her prep career, and this history-rich program is surging back to the forefront behind Campie’s leadership. She nearly eclipsed 1,000 assists this season and will keep filling up the stat sheet as an upperclassman.
Class C1 also had its share of 2025 setters, starting at the top with the #1 seed, North Bend Central. Kathryn Gaughen never seemed to feel the pressure of leading one of C1’s top teams this year, and that yielded a very efficient Tiger offense that was seldom stopped. There will be plenty of familiar faces returning to next year’s North Bend Central squad, which bodes well for Gaughen and the rest of her talented squad. Expect this sophomore to make another stop in Lincoln.
We saw a sophomore setter faceoff in the C1 quarterfinals with Gaughen going up against Gabrielle Feeney of Adams Central. The Patriots didn’t have many underclassmen on this year’s roster, but a sophomore setter tied together the whole offense en route to another tournament appearance. Emerging talents like Feeney have been key to Adams Central’s consistency, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Patriots back in the hunt in 2023.
Over in Class C2, Adi Rennerfeldt Adi Rennerfeldt 5'7" | S Oakland-Craig | 2025 State NE is a name we’ve had on our radar for a while. It’s hard not to know about her already, as Rennerfeldt set Oakland-Craigh to a historic state championship as a freshman last year. She promptly returned to the state tournament with the Knights this fall and added another 1,000-assists season to her ever-growing list of accomplishments. Rennerfeldt remains one of the state’s best small-town setters, and she’s just getting started.
Izabel Hollatz led the way for Clarkson/Leigh, another C2 team that made a repeat appearance in the state tournament this fall. The sophomore setter distributed well to a Patriots team that only had one senior in its lineup.
Lastly, I want to give a shoutout to Stuart sophomore Addisyn Ketteler. Ketteler can wear a lot of hats in the Stuart lineup, but she made her biggest impression as a do-it-all setter for the Broncos in Class D2. Though she split setter duties with senior Sydney Estill for much of the year, Ketteler proved she has all the skills to run an offense herself. That chance might come next season.
