Last year’s GJNC proved that Potthoff was ready to climb Nebraska’s setter hierarchy. She then piloted Gretna East to a state tournament appearance in the school’s inaugural volleyball season. This list of accomplishments inflated further as Potthoff and Premier Nebraska 17 Black punched its Nationals ticket through the Windy City Qualifier. Potthoff’s deceptiveness and willingness to set against the grain have set her apart the whole way. 2024 is another step in the right direction.

Potthoff is another athlete who was highlighted as a top uncommitted prospect in Nebraska’s Class of 2025. Her command of the Gretna East offense allowed the Griffins to make an immediate appearance in the Class B quarterfinals. And, like most other schools that are just starting on the prep scene, Gretna East will bring the whole 2023 crew back for another go in 2024. Potthoff will be even more dangerous.

Setters who are adept servers bring so much value to their team. If a team prefers to maximize its three-hitter rotations–which is a common strategy–that means the setter is going to see plenty of serving opportunities. Potthoff responded to that challenge for Gretna East and tallied a team-high 63 aces and a ton of other valuable serving runs. It was the perfect spark to Gretna East’s tournament berth in Year 1 of the program.

New team, same excellence. Potthoff was one of several players to make the hop from Gretna to newly built Gretna East this fall, and a Class B tournament appearance was the result in Year 1. The Griffins thrived whenever the middles got involved this year, and Potthoff showed a willingness to find them even when passing wasn’t perfect. That’s the sign of an impactful setter. Best of all, Potthoff has one more prep season to put this talent on display with the same personnel around her.

Potthoff had a phenomenal late-season charge during the 2023 club season with Premier 16 Black. That ought to be the perfect launching point to another prep season with Gretna, where Potthoff has already compiled plenty of matches as the team’s primary setter. Let’s see if Potthoff can help keep this history-rich program on the championship stage.C
