Spread out on multiple courts and split into multiple talent sets, this resilient group showed me (and the coaches in attendance) that they have something to offer a school for the fall of ’23. Here are four athletes that caught my eye.
Adayna Key Adayna Key 5'10" | MB Frankton | 2023 State IN , 5-11 MB/RS, Frankton HS
Quick on transition and a solid defender, Alayna showed some of the bigger middles that speed kills. Her ability to transition quickly speaks to her work ethic, and her long-armed attack could probably place her on the right side for a school that needs someone with multiple skill sets.
Zoie Bateman Zoie Bateman 5'10" | RS Evansville Reitz | 2023 State IN , 5-10 RS/OH, Evansville Reitz HS
Probably the most explosive of the senior pin attackers on display on Sunday, she hit every shot with ease AND with pace. Her smooth athleticism beat a ton of bigger and stronger blocks, and she puts away more out-of-system balls than the average pin attacker at this level. Zoie’s going to get stronger in a hurry with a college-ready weight room program, and I would not be surprised to see her as a three-rotation pin or a primary-passing outside (or both!) at the next level.
Karlye Schippert Karlye Schippert 5'11" | OH Evansville Reitz | 2023 State IN , 5-11 OH, Evansville Reitz HS
Another Reitz product, Karlye has the heavy arm to terminate from the left, and is still raw enough to be trained up and gain some strength. Larger schools might redshirt her, just to get that college-ready speed up to date. For smaller schools, she could play either pin as a three-rotation option.
Caitlyn Miller Caitlyn Miller 5'9" | OH Peru | 2023 State IN , 5-9 OH, Peru HS
Another springy and quick athlete, Caitlyn amassed nearly 500 kills in her high school career while blocking 200+ balls in the process. Playing at a smaller-than-average club, she’s a steal for any small school that wants either a three-rotation outside or a primary-passing outside. Her attack touch is over 9-6, so she’s already advanced in jumping ability. Her strength should get her through that first year grind of a college season, and the sky’s the limit for her potential.
