These athletes just finished their season of college volleyball and the results are very interesting. Some had big time breakout seasons, earning post season honors. Who are some of the notable 2022s who had big time seasons in their first year of college volleyball.
By The Numbers
52 of the Top 100 saw significant playing time (played in ¾ of the total sets for their team)
22 of the Top 100 earned postseason honors (All Freshman Team, All Conference, All Region, or All American)
A Look Back At The Rankings
Who was number one?
Mckenna Wucherer who prepped at Brookfield Central in the Milwaukee area and played club at Milwaukee Sting. Wucherer had plenty of international success as a six rotation outside hitter and would be looking to do the same at Minnesota. However, Wucherer started her year off at Minnesota in a boot, an injury that prevented her from the big start most would have envisioned. After missing ten matches, Wucherer would go on to collect just under 200 kills, good enough for 2.73 kills per set. She would earn Big Ten All Freshman Honors.

Where was National Freshman of the Year, Mimi Colyer ranked?
80th. Whoops. That was a miss on our end. Colyer comes from Lincoln, California and played club at Synergy Force. Her freshman year was one for the record books where she had nearly 500 kills and averaged 4.33 kills per set. She had one stretch during the season where she had four straight matches with at least 20 kills (20 vs. WSU, 25 vs. UW, 20 vs. USC, and 23 vs. UCLA). She had a huge match in Oregon’s regional semifinal win over Nebraska where she had 26 kills.
Stellar Setters
Coming into a program and having to run the show is no easy task, but Averi Carlson of Baylor and Alexis Stucky of Florida had big time freshman campaigns. Carlson was our number three overall prospect and the National Gatorade Player of the Year who played club at Skyline (TX) while Stucky had plenty of success on the USA Youth National teams, prepping at Laramie, Wyoming while playing club for NORCO out of Loveland, Colorado. Both of these athletes were spring enrollees to get a head start on their college career. Carlson was the Big 12 Freshman of the year while Stucky was SEC Freshman on the Year and also earned 3rd Team All American honors.
What freshman class had a huge season?
Auburn. This class had three on the ALL SEC Freshman team with Akasha Anderson, Kendal Kemp, and Madison Scheer. Anderson was the Freshman of the Year in the South Region while Kemp was an Honorable Mention All Region pick. Another Freshman who had a big season for the Tigers was Sarah Morton who had over 450 digs, leading the team. There is a lot of youth on this team who also scored a big upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating Crieghton on their home court.
What top prospects are in the transfer portal?
Carter Booth was one of the top freshmen in the country, earning All Big Ten, All Region, and was named the North Region Freshman of the Year. On Christmas Day she announced she would be continuing her volleyball career at Wisconsin. Another highly touted freshman is Katie Hurta who spent her first year at Penn State was the 14th ranked prospect in the country out of Chicagoland. As of December 26, she is in the transfer portal where she can set and swing.
Takeaways from the Top 100?
There are plenty of athletes who are in programs where they have All Americans established at their particular position.
The number of outside hitters playing significant time was the highest among all positions. While looking at statistics, outside hitters were able to be used as a defensive specialist, serving specialist, or a situational sub for a block or big swing.
18 of the 22 freshmen (out of the top 100) earning postseason honors were from a Power 5 conference.
Eva Hudson (Purdue) and Logan Lednicky (Texas A&M) were huge misses in these Class of 2022 rankings. Hudson was #110 and Lednicky was #133, with Hudson winning Big Ten Player of the Year at Purdue and Lednickly was a big time player in the SEC, earning All SEC honors. After seeing these athletes take over at Triple Crown last February, they showed they were among the top athletes in the Class of 2022.
Rankings are a tool, they are a resource. This is a good way for us to take a look at patterns and trends among programs, conferences, and even the transfer portal. We will continue to take a look at this class to see how their college and international careers pan out. As we always say at our showcases, no college program has given or taken away an offer due to a ranking (and if they are that may be a red flag). Congratulations to the Class of 2022 on finishing a successful first season.
