Small schools provided great and unexpected platers, and some of the traditional powers had underclassmen who were just waiting their turn to shine.
The top ten of each position group will be broken down in the next few days, followed by rankings and breakdowns for the next three classes in the state. Here are some players just outside of the top ten that played their way onto this final ranking for the class of 2023.
Dowell has been a super steady performer for Mt. Rainier, and she is a very effective scorer when she plays outside hitter. She has a grittiness as a player that you love to see, ultimately she should be playing defense at the next level. Excellent in the sand, Dowell would be a steal for any program as a dual beach and indoor athlete.
One of the two towers for the last four seasons at West Valley Yakima, she will be facing off against teammate Kennedy Webb Kennedy Webb 6’1″ | OH West Valley Yakima | 2023 State WA shortly. Kinloch will be taking big swings for Northwest Nazarene in the GNAC, while Webb stays closer to home at Central. Having played some middle in prior years, Kinloch’s passing and defense have now secured her a spot as an outside. She still brings that hard-working middle mentality to the pin position.
Moeva is a strong blocking middle who has just kept improving at Auburn Riverside. Great hands and agile feet from being a multi-sport athlete are two of her best qualities, perfect for a middle who is like a brick wall for opposing attackers.
Corban has a very good player headed their way in Kieser. A lefty setter and opposite, she should always be allowed to attack from the right side or in a 5-1. Her arm is whippy and she puts down kills at a high rate when she is going well. There is too much firepower there to just work as a back-row setter. Her height and length benefit her play when she is running a 5-1.
A total package player and rankings climber, just like fellow Lakeside pin Rebecca DePencier Piñero. Broesalme captured the league MVP award and a state final to wrap up 2024. An extremely hard worker who cares about the game and her teammates around her,
The second of the two Lakeside Lions on this particular list. It’s hard to separate the two as they both pass, dig and score the ball at a high level. DePencier Piñero is a true six-rotation, plug-and-play athlete with the smarts to score against a big block.
Garcia has a great ability to stay behind the ball as a hitter. She did the damage for Kennedy Catholic working from both pins and does an excellent job cutting the ball at a hard angle to score. The senior outside showed improved vision as a hitter, finding the hole in the block or the high hands.
The physical middle will be heading to Connecticut College next year, and she will make an impact quickly. A very hard worker, who starred all four years at Annie Wright. Always a strong blocker, she has become a dynamic attacker as well, especially pounding down quicks on opposing defenses.
Taliloa works particularly well from the right side, and her power game was perfect for Mt Rainer’s offense. gifted with great hands and the ability to do it all, she had a wonderful career for the Rams. She was able to share parts of it with her younger sister Alani, a sophomore who will be high in the 2025 rankings.
Caoili is a joy to watch play the game, her celebrations for her teammates are not to be missed. A skilled all around player who can swing with power, then make a fantastic diving save. She racked up many honors in her time at Kentridge, and is well trained as an attacker and defender.
Highlights
Spray has signed with Northwest Nazarene and will be in a defensive role at the next level. It fits her athletic profile, she has quick feet, great reactions, and is tough enough to hang in against a heavy swing. Spray is a winner and should be the starting libero at some point in her Nighthawk career.
Highlights
The senior setter from Skyview stays dynamic, jump setting to keep her hitters on time and the defense guessing. Her feet and hands are quiet and consistent to the ball, when she does pull out a dump or attack, it’s quick and hard to read. Check out some of her highlights at Nationals with OJVA.
