We’ve covered some of these athletes since they were 15. Prep Dig has updated the Class of 2023 National Rankings with the top 200 players in the country. We have consulted our network of scouts from over 20 different states as well as other coaches around the country to come up with our list. Let’s take a look at the best of the best, the top athletes at each position. We will have a series of articles to follow with recruiting classes, stock risers, and who to watch in this upcoming 18s club season from the Class of 2023.
Chloe Chicoine Chloe Chicoine 5'9" | OH McCutcheon | 2023 State #1 Nation IN or Harper Murray Harper Murray 6'2" | OH Skyline | 2023 State #2 Nation MI ?
If this were backyard volleyball and we had to pick two captains, they would be Chloe Chicoine Chloe Chicoine 5'9" | OH McCutcheon | 2023 State #1 Nation IN and Harper Murray Harper Murray 6'2" | OH Skyline | 2023 State #2 Nation MI . They are the top athletes in this class. Chicoine will head to Purdue and Murray will go to Nebraska. How do you pick between the two? Harper Murray Harper Murray 6'2" | OH Skyline | 2023 State #2 Nation MI was our top prospect in 2023 when we released our first national ranking for 2023 in February. We are finishing the Class of 2023 with Chloe Chicoine Chloe Chicoine 5'9" | OH McCutcheon | 2023 State #1 Nation IN as the top player in the Class of 2023. What was the deciding factor? Chicoine and Murray have had their success on the club courts – Circle City out of Indy and Legacy out of Detroit have always been the top in their age group throughout their careers. However, Chicoine has the edge when it comes to international and high school success. Chicoine was named Best Spiker at 2022 Pan Am Cup for the U21 National Team with some of the top collegiate players in the world. She has been legendary for McCutcheon High School out of the Lafayette Area in Indiana where they won a state title in 2021 and have been one of the top teams in the country the past two seasons. It’s splitting hairs here, they are elite, they are the best, and with what the future of volleyball holds – they should be prime candidates for some big time NIL deals.
The Top Setter – Bergen Reilly Bergen Reilly 6'1" | S O'Gorman | 2023 #4 Nation SD – Sioux Falls O’Gorman – Kairos (SD) – Committed to Nebraska
Reilly has done everything possible in South Dakota for her prep career, she’s the Queen of South Dakota volleyball, putting Kairos out of Sioux Falls on the national map. What has set her apart is her experience for USA Volleyball at the international level. She was on the U18 Team in 2021, U19 team in 2022, and even had a brief stint playing with the USA Women’s National Team at the Pan American Cup Final Six, definitely the youngest player on the squad. What makes Reilly so good is how she makes something difficult look so smooth and with relative ease (it’s not). Her footwork is textbook, her release is quick, she receives the ball high and is neutral with the ability to set every spot at multiple tempos. She puts her attackers in position to terminate. She will head to Nebraska early and has big time potential to lead a legendary recruiting class for the Huskers.
The Top Middle – Nya Bunton Nya Bunton 6'5" | MB DuPont Manual | 2023 State #7 Nation KY – DuPont Manual – KIVA (KY) – Committed to Texas
Seeing Bunton at Central Zone in 2021 playing for her KIVA 16s team was quite the impressive show. From the start, she was someone who was going to be high on the radar of college coaches across the country. She’s long, athletic, and extremely physical – she fits the mold of all of those Texas athletes who have been dominating the front line for years. At 6’3 with quite the wingspan, Bunton is able to run a very fast tempo, she’s a quick leaper with a fast arm – a really tough mismatch. She was part of the gold medal winning team for the U19 Pan American Cup. With her blend of length and speed, she makes a really tough match for the other side of the net.
Top Libero – Laney Choboy Laney Choboy 5'4" | DS/L Leesville Road | 2023 #10 Nation NC – Leesville Road – NC Academy (NC) – Committed to Nebraska
Laney Choboy Laney Choboy 5'4" | DS/L Leesville Road | 2023 #10 Nation NC brings such a spark and passion to the court where her energy is contagious and her game is electric. She’s been on the USA Volleyball radar since she walked on to the high school courts where she was part of the Youth National Teams the past two years. She was on the U18 squad in 2021 and was named “Best Receiver” at the Pan Am Cup for the USA U19 squad that took home the gold medal. Choboy was originally committed to Minnesota, but flipped to Nebraska this fall where she will fall in line to a list of All American liberos coming from that program.
