That has been in part due to the development of club programs on that side of the state. Leading the way has been FaR Out, which has consistently produced teams that compete on a national level.
In a talent-heavy 2025s class throughout Michigan, FaR Out has elevated some of those talents to older age groups.
However, it still brings a talented crop to the court in 2023 with FaR Out 16 Black.
FaR Out 16 Black
This group will be coached by Val Lury and Charley Andrews.
It brings in a lot of new pieces from the 15 Black team of a year ago, but should be an athletic group with a good understanding of the game.
2024 setter Mari Hansen helps provide the leadership for the team, which is composed of 2025s the rest of the way.
Hansen and Lexi Armstrong Lexi Armstrong 5'8" | S Hudsonville | 2025 State MI are the available setters, while Armstrong can also shift to DS. Both bring a lot of control and consistency to the court.
The steady setters will be helpful for a team that has a lot of moving pieces and a lot of hitters that can play anywhere across the net.
Dylann Kelly Dylann Kelly 6'1" | OH Jenison | 2025 State MI , Abby Leffring Abby Leffring 6'0" | OH West Michigan Christian | 2025 State MI , Ella Deklyen and Elyse Heffner Elyse Heffner 6'1" | MB Traverse City Central | 2025 State MI all are listed as an OH/OPP/MB option for FaR Out. Their diverse skills and athleticism allow the staff to plug them in where needed based on matchups.
Cambria Gaier Cambria Gaier 5'11" | OH Caledonia | 2025 State MI and Reese Lowe Reese Lowe 5'10" | OH Byron Center | 2025 State MI are both listed as OH/OPP options. Both are coming off big prep seasons where they led their respective schools offensively. Both also have the ability to be standout defenders and provide that six-rotation option.
Fruitport’s Sadie Haase Sadie Haase 5'11" | MB Fruitport | 2025 State MI will be a locked-in middle option for FaR Out 16 Black. The 6-foot Haase was a very productive middle during the prep season, showing strong instincts with her blocking and being able to shoulder a big offensive workload.
Defensively, Alyssa Krol Alyssa Krol 5'4" | DS/L Cedar Springs | 2025 State MI and Layna Waselewsky Layna Waselewsky 5'5" | DS/L Forest Hills Eastern | 2025 State MI will be the go-to defenders. Both faced the best of the best hitters in the Grand Rapids area throughout the fall and were able to raise their game to a higher level. That should payoff for FaR Out as the club season progresses.
Early on, this team has taken a few lumps with sub-.500 showings in the Mideast Power League and the MLK Ft. Lauderdale Invitational, but with the new pieces, that was to be somewhat expected.
As their chemistry and skillset catches up with the athleticism the team has, they can be a dangerous bunch. As they learn how to win the close sets, things could really take off for FaR Out 16 Black.
