Most of the top teams in the state headed to the traditional Countdown City Classic in San Antonio, but I went to the Legends Classic #3, which was hosted by the Open Court Sports Complex in Katy, on Saturday, instead.
The event was a 16s tournament attended by 20 teams from Houston and surrounding areas, which provided me with a great opportunity to take a look at some under-the-radar prospects from the region. I’m sharing my findings during the week, going over every position, and now it’s time to give some love to the outside hitters who made a strong impression.
Kalen Tuety
Kalen Tuety
Tuety emerged as one of the most interesting pin hitters in the tournament and was a key piece in HJV 16 Adidas’ run to the gold bracket. Her offense is the strongest part of her game as she’s very long and well-rounded at the net. Tuety has size and power to score, but can also hit around the block and use tips to put the ball down and is somewhat unpredictable, hitting quicker or higher sets. She has great foot speed and is very reliable with her scoring efforts.
Another standout from one of our recent Top 250 Expos to deliver in a club tournament, Marks was the heart and soul of her Texas Outlaws 16 Black team. She was heavily involved with every area of the game and contributed at a very high level on both sides of the ball. Marks is slightly undersized but can jump out of the gym and has a cannon of a right arm – she was unstoppable when hitting a quick set on the right as well. Her backcourt game is also very solid as she proved to be a capable passer and defender and a tough server.
Highlights
Wendy Shada
Wendy Shada
Shada came up as revelation during the last high school season, when, playing as a middle for Cypress Ridge, she earned an All-District Team Honorable Mention. She transitioned to the pin with HJV 16 Molten and has done a great job there during the Legends Classic #3. Shada has a very interesting offensive skillset as she jumps well, makes contact with the ball at a high point and is very accurate with her swings. She also has a strong floater, which caused a lot of problems to Houston Hurricanes 16 when the teams played.
Bentley Sloan
Bentley Sloan
Sloan was the main offensive player of her Houston Skyline 16 Silver team that advanced to the silver bracket. She jumps well, swings hard and is primarily a power hitter who overcomes opposing blockers with her length and strength but can also use finesse to score. Sloan, who can also play on the right, is very confident in her game and often calls for the ball in the most important moments of matches.
Elise Jameson
Elise Jameson
Jameson was one of the several standouts from a TX Hurricanes 16 CAT 5 team that made it to the gold bracket. The pin hitter, who also plays on the sand, showed to be a very complete player, who gets to contribute in several areas of the game. Very explosive, she was highly productive on offense, either finding open spots to swing or tooling the block. She made very few errors with her offense and also played an important role on defense and passing.
