Most of the top teams in the state headed to the traditional Countdown City Classic in San Antonio, but I went to the Legends Classic #3, which was hosted by the Open Court Sports Complex in Katy, on Saturday, instead.
The event was a 16s tournament attended by 20 teams from Houston and surrounding areas, which provided me with a great opportunity to take a look at some under-the-radar prospects from the region. I’m sharing my findings during the week, going over every position, and now it’s time we point out the right side hitters who provided reliable scoring for their teams.
Avery Clendenin
Avery Clendenin
Clendenin proved to be an exciting offensive option on the right for HJV 16 Adidas. Besides her good size and excellent vertical, she also proved to be a very intelligent hitter by taking full advantage of her high contact point to swing towards the end line, avoiding the block and making this difficult for the defenders. Versatile, Clendenin also played as a pin hitter, where she displayed solid passing, hard work on defense and a strong floating serve.
Emily Petrunico
Emily Petrunico
Petrunico was one of the good surprises of her Texas Outlaws 16 Black team in the tournament. A very complete player, she played on the right but was all over the court, involved with a lot of what the team did. Petrunico is not necessarily a powerful hitter, but she’s long and jumps well, becoming a challenging player to defend against. She also showed to be a reliable passer and made a handful of important digs playing middle back for the team.
Lydon McKernan
Lydon McKernan
McKernan was another talented player from HJV 16 Molten to show an interesting level of play during the Legends Classic #3. Her length, offensive reach and her ability to hit sharp angle from the right were probably the most intriguing aspects of her game, but McKernan also displayed great maturity and interesting resources to score when the set was off the net. Her blocking is also well-developed as she’s capable of reaching high up the net, but does it with great balance.
Sydney Mitchell
Sydney Mitchell
Mitchell’s game is still coming together, but the Houston Skyline 16 Silver right side hitter displayed some tools that could make of her a solid player in the future. A lefty, she has good athleticism and long arms, which she uses really well in her blocking attempts. Her offense is not at the same level, but the potential is clear since she has obvious firepower and makes great contact with the ball, being able to direct it anywhere on the court.
Sara Tilney
Sara Tilney
A versatile player, Tilney split her time with HJV 16 National playing on the right and the left. She might not be a very tall hitter, but is impressively explosive and can score using her power. Tilney is also very technical with her swing and manages to keep a high level of efficiency because of the good decisions she makes on offense. She also does a very good job of finding solutions to difficult situations and contributes on the backcourt with her passing and defense.
