Yesterday, we took a glimpse at a few under-the-radar 2025s who are poised for a breakthrough season this spring. We’re carrying that theme right into what should be a fascinating season for Nebraska’s 17s.
Here are just a few of my sleeper picks for the Class of 2024 in the Cornhusker State.
Cast has been a regular contributor in the Nebraska Juniors gym, and that consistency should carry into the 2023 season. The Syracuse prep star has seen some big stages on the high school stage and has performed well under that pressure at the outside hitter spot. Aside from her attacking prowess, Cast’s floor defense remains a major asset.
Not all of Nebraska Elite’s standout athletes hail from the Omaha metro. Johnson is a perfect example, as this high-flying outside hitter hails from Columbus and has brought so many highlight moments to the club scene. Look out for Johnson and her “Top Gun” squad as we kick off the new year.
We’re not far removed from West’s dominant junior campaign with Wausa High School last fall. If her impressive prep numbers are any indication, West is due for a breakout season with VCNebraska 17 Black this spring.
Highlights
Here’s another VCNebraska athlete who is sure to capture some attention in 2023. Topolski has evolved into a steady, effective opposite in the VCN gym, but she could easily play on the left pin if needed. Better yet, Topolski’s defensive skills often warrant a trip through the backcourt for this Lincoln East product.
Highlights
Time to bring Nebraska ONE into the mix with a small-town setter worth following. Hennerberg has helped her Diller-Odell squad to postseason appearances on multiple occasions, and she can apply that high-level experience to her 17 Lime squad to start 2023.
Ritterbush was one of our late-season stock risers from the 2022 campaign, and this libero is certainly looking to pick up where she left off. Premier 17 Red is the next venue for Ritterbush’s excellent floor defense and rock-solid serve receive skills.
Aside from defensive specialists like Ritterbush, Premier Nebraska will also bring a wealth of under-the-radar frontcourt talents to this year’s club season. Lamb will be one to know after she made incredibly valuable contributions to Omaha Westside’s runner-up 2022 season. Premier 17 Black will be glad to have Lamb’s physical presence in the middle, especially after this group had so much success last spring.
Let’s get Nebraska Volleyball Academy on the board here. Mandernach was a big part of Kearney Catholic’s return trip to Lincoln for postseason play, as she became a go-to attacker on the left side and was second on the team in kills. Whether she plays on the pin or in the middle for NVA, Mandernach is poised for another big year.
Boyd has a chance to be one of our top stock risers of the 2023 club season. She burst onto the scene last fall with an impactful defensive specialist role with Lincoln East, helping the Spartans to their first state championship appearance since 2008. That’s a huge momentum boost for Boyd as she competes with Premier 17 Red this year.
