Led by one of the breakout freshman in the state this past prep season, 15 Black is going to be aggressive with its hitting and pose a real problem for a number of teams.
Here’s a look at what MVA 15 Black has to offer in the 2023 club season.
MVA 15 Black
Jess Dood coaches this squad of 10 2026 prospects with a lot of promise.
Among this squad are four players that saw varsity action during the fall. Leading the way is outside Liv Hosford from Rockford.
Hosford was one of the few freshmen to earn All-State honors of any kind this fall. She was named Second Team All-State by MIVCA and Prep Dig Michigan. During the fall she played middle, but is shifting to the outside for the club season. As a freshman, Hosford hit .391 for the Rams while racking up 362 kills and 160 digs. She did all that as a 5’11” middle. Her explosiveness and court awareness will make her move to the outside no issue.
Also on the outside for this squad are Charlotte Segard Charlotte Segard 5'10" | OH Rockford | 2026 State MI and Tava Burchett Tava Burchett 5'8" | OH Northview | 2026 State MI , while Johanna Taatjes plays the right side. Taatjes and Segard bring a little added size at 6-foot each, but all three have a lot of good instincts on the floor and can get hot quickly at the net.
In the middle Madelyn Hungerford and Addison Jones also have a nice combo of size to work with. Hungerford is 6-foot with a 9’6” jump while Jones is 6’2” with a 7’10” reach. Each brings a little something different to the position and allows MVA to attack in different ways.
Handling the offense will be setters Izzie Delacher Izzie Delacher 5'9" | S Rockford | 2026 State MI and Kyla Charles. Delacher was the assist leader for the Rockford varsity program this fall and obviously is a well-coached and polished setter with a great family history at the position. Charles adds a little more length to the position at 5’9”, but also has a nice reach (7’8”) and jump (9’4”) to bring some different dimensions to the setter when she’s in the mix.
Defensively, Anwen Amash Anwen Amash 5'9" | DS/L Grand Rapids Christian | 2026 State MI and Sophia Zylstra will be the two DS/L options for the squad. Both have put a lot of time and effort to growing at the position over the last year and bring their own strengths to the role. Zylstra is a little smaller and quicker, while Amash is a little longer and can cover a lot of space. Both have the trust of their team.
This team is having success in the early going of the 2023 club season. It has racked up a lot of wins in the Michiana Power League, while also taking 15th in the Premier Red Division of the Central Zone Invitational.
This weekend MVA competed in the 15 Open of the President’s Day Classic in St. Louis. While picking up a few wins on the weekend, MVA tasted some tough defeats, with a number of sets lost by just two points.
Clearly this team brings plenty of physicality to the net and has an offense that can get in a really good groove. The key for MVA 15 Black will be locking in on the details and become a technically sound team throughout the club season.
