Presidents Day weekend marked the first major tournament date that included full recruiting with every level of college coaches on the road. Many of these athletes may have played at the ninth-grade or junior varsity level during the high school season. The first taste of five-day-a-week play for 3 months, combined with the step up to 15/16 league and tournament competition during the club season is a recipe for huge growth and development on the court. Here is the first group of athletes that have grabbed a prominent role in the early season, headed into the competition-packed months of March and April.
Alyssa Nichols
Alyssa Nichols
Nichols showed she could compete at a high level when jumped in and played with the Gonzaga Prep varsity team at a pre-season tournament. She continued to kill the ball consistently from the outside during the JV season, and looks even more aggressive for Club South. She is able to move the ball around the block, and has excellent pace and location on her serves. The 15 Carolina team is building something on the South Hill of Spokane, the team has good size and skilled players at every position.
Chloe Hammond
Chloe Hammond
The defender from Davenport is one of many capable players on the Club South backline. When you are part of a small school like Davenport, you may have multiple roles on the court. It’s not too often you are a Middle/DS, then a libero in the club, but that’s how versatile Hammond can be. As a libero, she has good movement and reads the attackers well. She was tough as a server in Club South’s fifth place finish at the Fiesta Festival Classic, with a float serve that dove late putting heavy pressure on the passers.
Audrey Menghini
Audrey Menghini
Menghini will get everything she can out of an attack, she is not going to be cheated. Her aggressive style produces kills from the middle, her position during the early part of the club season. She is versatile enough to swing from the pins and has a good vertical she uses to get on top of the ball and turn it away from the block. Menghini has a solid connection with 2027 setter Kate Harris, the two combined on several highlight plays at the Las Vegas Classic.
Patrice Robinson
Patrice Robinson
The length and strong block that Robinson brings to the middle for PSVBA 15 is what all coaches want to see from a young MB. She will run a confident route on a quick set in system, and is seeing the block when she attacks. Robinson showed a good feel of when to throw a tip in, dropping it directly over the top of the middle blocker. There is a great deal of upside, Robinson has a high ceiling to work with.
Emilee Nelson-Hawkins
Emilee Nelson-Hawkins
Hawkins is a setter that knows how to play defense first, and she did that for a talented Selah team during the high school season. She is a stat stuffer, contributing assists, digs and aces for her CRU 16 squad, and she has excellent targets available in Alana Marrs, Taryn Rising and others. Hawkins will go all out to run down a ball or get on the floor for a dig, she always gives tremendous effort.
