And make this their second championship after capturing the open title at their first qualifier in their backyard in Kansas City. They then traveled to Florida where they made their way to the third-place match but didn’t need to play it after having already secured a bid. This past weekend they traveled to the Music City Classic in Tenn…wait, no…it was in New Orleans this year.
The Mavs rolled through day 1 not dropping a set beating quality teams such as Vegas Aces, Norco, and Top Select. They started the second day with a hard-fought three-set defeat to TAV 18 Black. They then had to turn around and battle in another three-set showdown with Houston Jrs. but they found a way to come out on top in this match. Mavs finished their day by defeating Alamo to capture the top seed in the pool after TAV dropped their other two matches.
Round 3 pool action saw Mavs teamed up with Houston Skyline and a familiar foe in Vegas Aces. The first set against Skyline went extra points and saw the Kansas City team pull it out 29-27 before earning the sweep in the second. For good measure, they decided to rack up 30 points in the first set against Vegas Aces before sealing the deal with a sweep. The final match saw them take the first set over Arizona Rev -22 before taking them behind the shed in the second, with a -9 win to capture the title.
Mavs Head Coach Beau Barnthson shared he thought the team played really good over the course of the weekend. They had a few of those clunker matches but were pleased they were able to pull them out. When asked who played well he gave kudos to Betsy Goodenow Betsy Goodenow 6'0" | RS St. Thomas Aquinas | 2023 State #92 Nation KS , who battled through some pain all weekend and fought through it. “ Reagan Barth Reagan Barth 6'0" | OH Shawnee Mission West | 2023 State KS was phenomenal all weekend, playing at a very high level and very consistent to score points for us”, shared Barthson. He added, “ Reagan Anderson Reagan Anderson 5'3" | DS/L St. Thomas Aquinas | 2023 State KS controlled our defense and serve/receive. She made plays all weekend that proves why she is the best at that position in her class”. Going 8-1 in an open qualifier is no small feet and the coach was pleased with the offense and praised Logan Jones Logan Jones 5'10" | S Carl Junction | 2023 State #57 Nation MO for running it smoothly and getting the middles involved, who is said carried them through the finals helping create distance against a tough Arizona Rev team.
The Mavs aren’t done as they hope to capture another top 3 finish in las Vegas in the coming weeks.
