Coming into the 16 Open competition, we had all three of the bids from the Sunshine Classic on tap. HPSTL, Tribe, and Game Point, only Tribe made it into the final four this time. It was a weekend you didn’t want to miss.
Let’s check out the bid-ness in 16 Open this weekend at the Mid-East Qualifier.
16 Open
The 16 Open was a blood bath this weekend. Coming into the tournament, I did not have very strong predictions of who I thought would win it all, but going into championship Sunday, I don’t know if I had KIVA in my top two. But man, did KIVA go all out on Day 3.
KIVA showed a lot of grit on the final day of the Mid-East Qualifier. Not only did they edge out No Name in three during the gold medal pool rounds, but they just made it out of the semi-finals against Tribe in three too. KIVA went on to win the entire tournament, beating Circle City in a tight two set match with both going into overtime. KIVA not only won the 16 Open at MEQs, but they will be making their first appearance at USAV Nationals for the first time in a VERY long time.
Rounding out the the final four members included Circle City, MKE Sting and, now double-qualified, Tribe. Circle City had only dropped one match all weekend, against a stout Austin Skyline squad. But from that loss against Skyline to start Day 2, Circle City made quick work of every opponent up until their semi-final game against MKE Sting. It was impressive!
As for MKE Sting and Tribe, both of their lone losses didn’t come until their very last match. Both teams had superb outings with Tribe not dropping a single set until Sunday and MKE Sting just narrowly missing out on a championship against KIVA.
Coming out of MEQs, KIVA and Circle City both punched their tickets to USAVs in Chicago this July. Tribe is now double-qualified and MKE Sting now has a bid in both 16 National and 16 Open.
