Coming into the 18 Open competition, we had 14 teams already qualified for 18 Open in Columbus. Near the entire field on tap had their ticket punched for the 18s GJNC in Open, National or USA competition. Needless to say, this division was stacked!
Let’s check out the bid-ness in 18 Open this weekend at the Mid-East Qualifier.
16 Open
Three more open bids were on the line this weekend. Like I said in the opener, it seemed like nearly everyone already had their ticket punched, but some teams came in looking to make statements while punching theirs.
One of those “statement-making” teams was Elevation. By the way this squad was playing this weekend, I was convinced that this team had been given their bid and riding high, but not yet. Without a bid, this was the perfect time to show up and show out at one of the hottest qualifiers of the season.
Elevation marched all the way to not only their long-overdue bid, but also the Mid-East Qualifier championship on an amazing undefeated weekend going 10-0 against the likes of Legacy, Skyline and more.
Now, double-bidded Circle City was a mere two points away in the third from having themselves a championship on their home turf. The way this team is performing this season is quite amazing given their losses. Along the way to a runner up finish, City only dropped a single match, a three setter to NKYVC on Day 2.
All you needed to do was make it into the final four to secure yourself a bid in this one and thats exactly all Adversity needed to do. After scratching and crawling their way through the first two days, this team found themselves amongst the final four teams in the field. Win or loss, they had themselves their ticket to Columbus in a few short weeks.
Rounding out the final four, Paramount also had themselves a great weekend. Losing to Circle City in the semis, they’re still now a double-bidded team.
After Elevation and Adversity, trickle down awarded the next open bid to FC Elite. FC Elite just missed the final four, but previously had a bid in 18 National.
