Iowa is always known for having really complete, all around athletes – usually multisport kids who are extremely dynamic. Here are some 2024s to take a look at as April continues with plenty of opportunities for these athletes to shine.
Gabby Lombardi Gabby Lombardi 5'11" | RS Des Moines Christian | 2024 State IA – Des Moines Christian – Six Pack
Lombardi comes from a long line of high level athletes in her family. At 6’0, long, and extremely athletic, I’ve seen Lombardi dominate matches from the pin, but also be a setter as well for Six Pack. She has a really diverse skill set that is rare for most athletes. Six Pack 17s are slated to compete at the Open level for Windy City Qualifier this weekend where there will be plenty of high level coaches on their court.
Ava Helming Ava Helming 6'0" | MB Johnston | 2024 State IA – Johnston – Iowa PowerPlex
A really physical frontline player, Helming has been a standout for Johnston in the fall and PowerPlex during the club season. She’s touching nearly ten feet and has a high contact point where she can hit from anywhere along the front line. I saw Helming as a sophomore at the state tournament and at our Prep Dig Pre-National showcase where I could see her leaping ability. She is continuing to elevate her game for a really athletic squad who has some great talent in the Class of 2024 and 2025.
Michaela Goad Michaela Goad 6'1" | MB Marion | 2024 State IA – Marion – Iowa Rockets
So athletic. Watching Goad from her 16s year to her 17s year, I have seen her skill really improve to go along with her athleticism and strength. I was very impressed with her play at the state tournament and most recently saw her at the Mideast Qualifier in Indianapolis a couple weeks ago. She is extremely active scoring points in the front row with her ability to hit a variety of angles and use a plethora of shots. Her upside is a major plus for college coaches.
Kate Vondrak Kate Vondrak 6'0" | MB East Sac | 2024 State IA – East Sac County – NWI Premier
NWI Premier will be at the Windy City Qualifier this weekend and if you’re a college coach looking for 2024s, I would highly suggest watching this team. This club is putting themselves in place to compete against top competition where a lot of these athletes are multisport, hardworking, small town kids out of Northwest Iowa – the type of athletes you want a part of your college program. Vondrak has plenty of length as an outside hitter. I was able to watch their match against Milwaukee Sting at the Mideast Qualifier where she was able to score points and wasn’t afraid to swing hard against a big, physical team. There are some hidden gems playing with Vondrak on this squad.
Ellery Luhring Ellery Luhring 5'8" | S Grundy Center | 2024 State IA – . Grundy Center – CIA
Luhring is one of the top all around players in the Class of 2024 in Iowa. I have seen her play libero and then set where she looks natural at each position. She has such a natural feel for the game where she can play any position. At the next level, I’m making the assumption she would be a libero, but I’m sure she would be ready to play any position with her type of skill set. CIA 17 Black will be at Windy City and there are plenty of 2024s who would be a great fit at the next level. Her Grundy Center team is going to be one to watch this fall as they return plenty of talent from their regional final squad in 2022.
