Atlanta turned into Hotlanta this weekend with all of the top volleyball talent in the country in one gym.
We’re coming down to the wire here in the qualifier season. Many teams came into Big South with their tickets punched and many more looking to secure their bids to the GJNC in July.
17 Open was a tough division to be in this weekend. With seven total teams coming in with bids to nationals, some being double qualified, it was looking to be anyone’s game. For a second time in a row, we saw a match-up between Triangle and Colorado Juniors in the final four, a match ALWAYS worth the watch.
Let’s take a look into this bid-ness today at the Big South Qualifier.
17 Open
With about seven qualified teams coming into the field in Atlanta, we could have saw a real deep trickle down for the bid. Surprisingly, but not so surprising, the championship and runner-up were two teams without a bid. This wasn’t without a fight though. Not a single record was left unblemished in the 17 Open.
Club V took home the ultimate crown at Big South alongside their ticket to USAV Nationals in July. It was the tale of a well-oiled machine and a lot of grit this weekend. The tower in the middle, Zoey Burgess (Kansas), had a huge weekend for this Utah based club and came up huge in the final two rounds of the tournament.
NKYVC was not going to go down without a fight in this championship match however. After a tough first set, NKYVC came storming back to force a third, 27-25. Ultimately dropping the match and title, this team not only walked away with their tickets punched to nationals, but they’re look much closer to their Triple Crown form. This is dangerous for everyone who has to see them across the net.
Finishing in third and fourth place at Big South were a pair of power house teams in Triangle and Colorado Juniors. These two went toe-to-toe back at MEQ and put on one heck of a show. These teams just ooze of physicality and top notch ball control in their game. It’s always a fun one seeing the likes of Starck and company go against a team that can match their height and strength at the net.
After Club V and NKYVC, the next bid earning went to fifth place, Momentous. This is another highly physical team with the likes of MB Tatum Johnson and OPP Cymarah Gordon. They managed to outlast Alamo in a three set battle for the bid, another fun match to watch with all the stakes on the line!
