After last season’s 16-1s team finished 33rd in the region, this year’s team had a standout season in power league, and they had some success and several excellent matches during this year’s Regionals tournament. The 16-1 team had some recent success at the NW Jrs AAU Spring Classic, too, where they came away with an impressive 3rd place finish out of 34 teams. It will be exciting to see how this team develops and improves even more next season, assuming many of the athletes continue to play together. The Chaos 16-1s are coached by Matalasi Laban, who played at Warner Pacific University and acts as the club’s Assistant Director. Laban is assisted by Yayoi Stearns, Chaos’s Operations Director.
Jordyn Marquett
Jordyn Marquett
Marquett, a six-rotation outside hitter, is a solid all-around athlete who carries a big offensive and defensive load for the 16-1s team. On serve receive, Marquett is consistent and steady, often putting up very settable passes for setter Mieren. Marquett is super quick on defense, too, hustling to get to every ball that she can from middle back. When Marquett gets a good set, she rips away at the ball, putting it away deep into the court. She mixes up her offense, too, often making smart shots to throw the other team’s defense off.

She uses a soft touch and strong hands to place the ball well for her hitters, getting her feet to nearly every pass. Mieren is a smart setter, mixing up where she sets and knowing when and where to dump the ball on two to score. She has a wickedly tough serve, too. As for her court presence, Mieren’s energy and passion is palpable, and she is a natural leader.

Libero Stearns is a steady back row player, bringing a calm presence to her team’s defense. On serve receive, she is solid and disciplined, kickstarting her team’s offense effectively. Stearns uses quick reactions and her natural athleticism to pick up balls on defense. When she gets a set, she is a strong and consistent attacker from the back row. From the baseline, Stearns has a tough serve that helps her team score.

Wang is a versatile front row player, able to hit from the middle or the right side as needed. She uses her height and length to put up a solid block and gets to the pins quickly when playing from the middle. With an aggressive and powerful arm swing, Wang is not afraid to hammer away at the ball; but, she also has strong court awareness and can make smart plays to tip around the block when needed.
Dylan Wise
Dylan Wise
Middle hitter Wise is a weapon offensively, and has the height and athleticism to put up a big block. Wise’s confidence on the court shows as she effortlessly moves from pin to pin to block her opponents, transitions quickly, and uses a quick and fluid approach to put the ball away from the middle or, sometimes, from the pins. Wise’s aggressive and fast arm swing allows her to score frequently for her team.
