The gigantic event held at the George R. Brown Convention Center will feature over 500 teams in its 11 divisions and club teams from all over the Lone Star State will be on the court in what’s expected to be one of the top events of the season.
Some of the top talent in Texas club volleyball will be in action over the weekend in Houston and we’re taking the week leading to it to feature some of those players. These liberos have what it takes to make a big impact from the backcourt:
Moriah Poe
Moriah Poe
The starting libero for Katy United 15 Adidas, Poe will be competing in the 15 Bid division. A very technical player, she’s very clean with her first contact and is always extremely precise when delivering the ball to her setter. Poe covers a lot of ground on serve-receive and is very efficient with it, keeping her team in system more often than not. Her ball control is excellent and it reflects positively on her defense as the libero is always very active in the left back position.
Coming from a strong performance at the Lone Star Classic just a few weeks ago, Arceneaux will lead the backcourt efforts of her team SA Juniors 16 Adidas in the 16 Bid division. She brings the entire package as a libero, having not only the technical skills to play the position, but also the right mindset for it. Besides very skilled on the ball, Arceneaux is also very determined and focuses on the court, delivering exactly what her team needs from her. She’s one of those liberos that can truly make a difference with her play.
Recognized as one of the best liberos in the Houston area, Rau will be working on the backcourt of her H Skyline BCS 17 Royal in the 17 Bid division. What makes of her such a productive defensive player is the fact that, besides very technical and skilled, she’s also extremely athletic. Rau has tremendous strength in her lower body and can get to balls in no time on the backcourt. She’s very consistent and efficient in each of her actions of the backcourt, be it passing or playing defense, and also plays a big leadership role with her team, cheering her teammates and keeping communication going during matches.
Highlights
The Austin Skyline 17 Royal team that will be competing in the 17 Bid division has two very strong defensive players in Flores and Mia Perez Mia Perez 5’6″ | DS/L Hendrickson | 2024 TX . Flores has been stepping up as the team’s libero more often lately and that’s an outcome of her fantastic performances during the club season, which made her stock rise significantly. Flores has emerged as a very strong defensive player, reacting quickly to hard-driven swings and reading the game tremendously well. Her passing is also very consistent and accurate.
Murillo has been one of the most consistent liberos in the Houston area over the last few years – she plays for TX Legacy 17 Elite and will be on the court in the 17 Bid division. Her technical skills are very easy to see but perhaps what contributes the most to her efficiency is her mental strength. From the first to the last point of a match, Murillo will have the same expression on her face and she’s certainly not a player who has ups and downs during matches, remaining steady no matter what. She’s an excellent passer and also makes a very strong impact on defense.
