Continue ReadingEach summer Catoosa hosts a summer league. This summer they have 2 separate waves that contain a total of 32 teams. It will consist of 4 weeks of teams being shifted around into four team pools. It is a great opportunity for these teams to begin knocking off the rust or just start to mesh with their new mix of HS players. It is mainly made up of Northeastern Oklahoma teams. Let’s take a look at a few teams/players who performed well in week 3.
Madison Robertson- DS for Berryhill. A senior who is ready to step up and help her team keep fighting in a tough 4A class. She has ability to move around the court quick and effortlessly but what sets her apart is her ability to keep her platform calm while doing it. This helps her keep from having arid passes during these fast movements. She has had a couple very talented defensive players come before her to learn from. Look for her to have a solid senior season.
Evyn Morrow- DS for Sand Springs. Evyn has seen varsity time since her sophomore year. She played for TPV this past season and will join the 17-1 team at nationals later this month. Evyn played out of her mind in week 2 in both the serve receive game and more impressively the in transition game. Her ability to read a hitter and preemptively get into a good position allows her to make some amazing digs. She will have plenty of opportunities in week 4 against Glenpool, Inola and Bartlesville.
Addi Vance- DS for Salina. Addi did a good job of looking very calm and poised at all times. She is the rock of the Wildcats defense and will help this team do big things again in 2023. She also has the ability to effect the game in the second most important aspect, serving. Her serve doesn’t give opposing passers much time to make adjustments and decisions.
Ruby Hall- MB for Oologah. Ruby is a young player but has the height to already begin helping her high school. I watched her get multiple big stuff blocks, which helped give her team big swings of momentum. It is players like this that will have the Mustangs surging upwards soon.
Taylor Garrison- DS for Claremore. Taylor is a senior for the Zebras. She provides a ton of effort and energy for her team. She will likely be the loudest player on the court each and every night. She saw some varsity time last season and almost assuredly will be the starting libero this season. She also possess relentless pursuit in defense, she was able to track down and keep alive a few balls that few others could chase down.
Morgan Keeler- OH for Verdigris. She is next in the long line of hitters for Coach Horton. Her graduated multiple big time front row players but Verdigris will quickly reload. Her ability to hit the wrist away cross shot is a thing of beauty. She is just a junior and will give the Cardinals two solid years of top notch play.
Wrap Up:
Keep in mind that summer league is just that, a summer league. Most teams focus on skill building, team meshing, playing lots of players and having fun. Not many coaches are focusing on if they win or lose during this time. This is just the slow start to what will be an awesome 2023 high school season.
