The 50th AAU Girls National Volleyball Championships have finally come to an end. After a long two weeks of non-stop action, kicking off with the 14 and 18s age group. It was wave 4, that featured the 16s age group, that really ended the hotly anticipated tournament with a bang.
Teams from across the country send the best of the best of what got to AAUs. But if we were to point out a standout state state, it was the Mitten state directly 956 miles north that had an explosive showing in Wave 4.
From the top two divisions at the championships, Open and Premier, Michigan showcased five teams that placed within the upper echelon of the field. Here’s the break down of how they did. Let’s check out Legacy 16-1 Adidas.
Legacy 16-1 Adidas finishes fifth in Open
With some of the top players in the country, this Legacy group was on the hunt for their second straight national championship. It was looking like they could pull it off.
On day 1, Legacy cruised along in straight sets each match. For the most part, this squad was really untested and unbothered. They were on a mission.
Move onto day 2, it was looking to be a different story with the opening set where Lexington United stoled the first set. But if the next set was any indication, 25-13, it was not going to last long. Legacy would go onto win this one in three and wouldn’t see another set get closer than 7 points until the final set of the day.
Day 3 was a different story though. Thrown into the trenches with two eventual elite 8 teams with KIVA and OT Roberto, Legacy would drop their first two games of the tournament. And it was looking like there was a possibility of them being eliminated from gold contention if they were to drop their crossover match Dallas Premier. After Premier caught on some fire in the second set, the third was to stay in gold or drop to ruby division, Legacy prevailed, 15-9.
Legacy would then be paired up with a pretty big and physical team, Northern Lights for a primetime challenge match. Once again, Legacy saw themselves clawing from behind after dropping the first set and pushing a third. Down 13-10 in the third set, everything was on the line. A side out kill and a huge three point service run from Mallory Reck Mallory Reck 5'10" | RS Northville | 2025 State MI would put Legacy back in the drivers seat and in control. After a little pushback from Northern Lights and a MAJOR controversial call late in the third. A Campbell Flynn Campbell Flynn 6'2" | S Mercy | 2025 State #4 Nation MI swing on two would not only secure the match, but secure them a spot in the Elite 8.
On championship day, Legacy would play in their fourth straight three match in a row. A real barn burner in the quarterfinals match versus OT 16 JP. This team out of Tampa lost to Legacy exactly a year ago in the national championship for 15 Open. They would go on to avenge that loss and win, 10-15 in the third.
Player Highlights
Campbell Flynn Campbell Flynn 6'2" | S Mercy | 2025 State #4 Nation MI was named to the AAU All-American list for the second year in a row. This comes after being named MVP of the 15 Open championships last season. Flynn was once again was one of the top players in the field. With her recent commitment to Nebraska, Flynn was putting on a show every time she stepped onto the court.
Some of the other highlights on this team came from the play in the middle and the pins. Olivia Grenadier Olivia Grenadier 6'1" | MB Country Day | 2025 State #91 Nation MI continues to wow and impress. Her leaping abilities seem world class and her connection with Flynn is a beauty to catch in action. When Grenadier subbed out though, i was really pleased with the play of Addison Williams Addison Williams 6'2" | MB South Lyon East | 2025 State MI . Her growth in the middle after having a standout season on the right side last season shows a lot of promise for this team for years to come.
On the pins, Marie Laurio Marie Laurio 5'10" | OH Saline | 2025 State #147 Nation MI and Keely Culler Keely Culler 5'11" | OH Archbold | 2025 State OH , were big time. Laurio has really come into her own this club season and was at the pinnacle here in Orlando. Her shots were clever and effective and her pass and defense were exactly what Legacy needed. Culler on the right side was a great spot to place the explosive hitter. Culler is a high flier and a heavy banger, given the chance, she was scoring with ease.
