For the first time ever, we’re getting a sneak peak of the big names of tomorrow. In Prep Dig’s first ever Freshman Showcase series, some of the top 2027s have been putting on a show! Michigan’s Freshman Showcase was a real doozy of talent.
With many of these players coming off of big club seasons on the 14s levels, i could see an argument for a majority of these players going off to have big debuts on some of the top varsity programs in the state!
Without further ado, let’s check out some of the fresh faces, you need to keep up with this fall!
Leah Bongiovanni – 6’0 OH – Marian
As seen in part 1, Marian is coming back into the 2023 season with some serious young talent to replace the last two graduating classes. Bongiovanni is one of those players that can make a big impact down the road. An explosive arm when she gets the right ball, as she grows and matures, Bongiovanni is going to be a big threat on the court.
Brenna Mirovsky – 5’8 S – Oxford
Oxford is going to be in great hands with Mirovsky coming into the picture this fall. One of the most promising prospects from this 2027 class, Mirovsky has just about every tool in her tool box to be successful. A live arm, great defense and impeccable location, Mirovsky could be the game-changer Oxford needs this fall.
Joelle Mio – 5’1 L – Marian
Yet, another Marian kid showing up and showing out at the Freshman Showcase. Mio has a lot of upward potential to her game. While small, Mio is mighty in the back court and has a really nice first touch to the ball. Throughout her time at Marian, she’ll be learning from one of the best in the country, Mayssa Cook, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see her become a top ‘bro of the 27 class.
Izzy Lawhorn – 6’0 MB/OH – Lake Orion
The volleyball genes run rampant in this family. Following in the footsteps of older sisters, Hannah Murdock (Michigan State/Grand Valley State) and Nina Horning (Cincinnati), Lawhorn shows all the signs to be the next big player in this lineage. While listed as a middle blocker, Lawhorn was showcasing some serious potential on the pins.
Demi McCoy – 5’8 OH – Detroit Country Day
This is going to be a kid that progresses to do some big things down the road. McCoy oozes athleticism and untapped talent. While a middle blocker for MiElite’s 14 National team this spring, McCoy’s future is on the pins. With her explosiveness off of the ground and whip of an arm, McCoy’s game is very reminiscent of a Remi Madison, recent MiElite alum.
Cynthia Ockerman – 6’2 MB – Brighton
This player has been a very prominent name in the volleyball world already in her short career thus far. Ockerman stands head and shoulders above her peers and backs up with a lot of prowess on the court. An intense blocker and heavy arm on offense, Ockerman will surely make immediate impact for Brighton this fall. Learning from one of the best middle blockers to come out of the University of Michigan, Cori Crocker, Crocker will act as an amazing mentor throughout Ockerman’s career.
Brooklyn Rummler – 6’1 MB – Stoney Creek
I see a lot of potential in this one. Standing tall at 6’1, Rummler has all of the makings for an elite player. Lengthy and energetic, I could see Rummler making some serious noise the more in tune she gets with her body. When she gets on top of the ball, its scoring every time, but it’s not all too often this happens quite yet.
Samantha Monroe – 6’0 MB – Marian
One of the biggest areas that Marian could use some bodies and depth is at the middle blocker position, Monroe is coming into her high school career at the perfect time. With an opportunity to walk in and get big playing time from day 1, Monroe has the ability to step in and connect quickly with the Marian system.
Cydnee Speights – 5’11 OH – Royal Oak
For the most part, I knew a lot of these athletes coming into the showcase from the latter portion of the last club season. Speights is a new player on my radar – and a really exciting one at that! Much like McCoy, Speights has all the makings of a powerful volleyball player. She jumps well, hits a heavy ball and moves very well.
