The first WI Freshman Showcase was a huge success. Talented athletes from across the Midwest competed at the Sting Center for two hours of high-level volleyball. It was a ton of fun seeing so many athletes who are new on my radar. Here are some GameChangers from the WI Freshman Showcase.
Taylor Berg – 5’8″ – Outside Hitter – Marist – 1st Alliance
Taylor was taking massive rips on the ball. She could turn any set into a powerhouse swing. Her pass to attack was impressive, and she never stopped working on the court. Her great fundamentals set her up for success. Taylor can swing through blocks with an explosive approach and a high vertical.
Gigi Chasco – 5’10” – Setter – Wisconsin Lutheran – Sting
Gigi kept catching my eye at the showcase. I first took notes on her during warm-ups, where she had a clean platform and solid swing. Gigi is a setter who excels in all of her skills. She was taking big swings on the ball and had a lot of power. As a setter, she moves the ball around with tempo. She has a quick touch and clean follow-through on her sets.
Tatum Jahns – 5’7″ – Setter – Muskego – Milwaukee Juniors
Tatum was all business when she was on the court. She played every point with competitiveness and intensity. Tatum really impressed me with her form and decision-making as a setter. She also took some nice swings when she was on the right side. Tatum is a smart player who translates her court awareness into points.
Payton Scifres – 5’11” – Setter – Westosha Central – Sky High
Payton was one of the most impressive athletes at the showcase, and that is something I don’t say lightly because there were some truly amazing athletes competing. Payton checked all the boxes as a setter; she was quick, smart, had a high volleyball IQ, aggressive with her choices, precise with her placement, and so much more.
Carly Dawson – 6’0″ – Outside Hitter – Washington Community – East Side
Carly was a really high-level pin at the showcase. She was an absolute stud player in everything she did. Her swings dominated the court. Not only did she swing around and through blocks, but also over them as well. Her pass to attack was efficient and clean, and everything she touched seemed to be a perfect contact on the ball.
Amorina Compean-Costello – 5’4″ – DS/Libero – Brookfield East – Sting
Amorina was dynamic and electric on the court. Her communication was next level as was her play. She read the hitters she was up against early and was able to pick up some really tough balls. Her platform is clean, and her angles are near perfect. Amorina was confident and collected in every drill and impressed me from warm-ups to the very last serve in the competition drills.
Addison Kelenic – 6’1″ – Middle Hitter – Catholic Memorial – Sting
Addison was a middle who caught my eye because of her talent and her leadership. She was always communicating with her setters and other front-row players. She laid out to try to pick up several balls in coverage and gave all-out effort every single moment at the showcase. She worked hard and elevated the athletes around her.
Kyla Mitchell Kyla Mitchell 6'3" | MB Lockport | 2027 IL – 6’1″ – Middle Hitter – Lockport – Michio
Kyla has a high volleyball IQ. She saw the court at a higher level than nearly any other athlete at the showcase. Her ability to identify shots and then execute on offense was impressive. She placed some truly spectacular tips and shots during the showcase. Kyla also has a lot of power on the ball and balances being aggressive and consistent very well.
Georgia House – 5’4″ – DS/L – arrowhead – Sting
Georgia has some of the cleanest and simplest form of any libero I have seen at this age. She reacts to balls quickly and gets herself set up for success on defense and serve receive. Georgia runs through many balls that others may dive for and impressed me in every aspect of her game.
