Saturday gave us a chance to get a look at some of the top incoming freshmen in the state for the upcoming prep season.
This crew of 2027 talents looks quite impressive and many are going to be immediate Gamechangers for a program.
Grace Goodyke, OH Grand Rapids Christian/FaR Out
A program that will need some hitters to step up, maybe Goodyke will be one of those options. The 6-footer has an even longer reach that she uses to produce a lot of high-velocity swings that can power through blocking. She also brought a Gamechanging serve to the table that gives her multiple ways to make an impact.
Kate Kalczynski, OH Mercy/Legacy
Listed at 5’11”, I think we need a re-measure, as Kalczynski sure plays a lot longer than that. Her wingspan was arguably as wide as anyone and it showed in her consistent play at the net. Kalczynski was probably the most powerful hitter in this showcase and she proved it time and again. She could really hang in the air and not only had the power, but consistently found the floor on her swings as well.
Calli LeFevre Calli LeFevre 5'11" | OH Marian | 2027 State MI , OH Marian/Legacy
LeFevre was a prospect that got better as the showcase went on. By the end of it, she was putting together some eye-catching kills. LeFevre quickly developed chemistry with her setters to get the ability to put the ball down with a lot of authority. Away from the net, LeFevre gave her all defensively and made a lot of scrappy plays to keep a point alive.
Brenna Mirovsky, S Oxford/Michigan Elite
Mirovsky was a hustle player that didn’t let her high motor ever slow down or impact her setting ability. She worked her tail off defensively and communicating with her hitters, then very casually got back to being a setter and making her sets look effortless while putting them in great spots for her hitters to finish.
Makayla Naves, DS/L Grand Blanc/Legacy
Naves is a quick defender that is able to cover a lot of ground with her athleticism and steady footwork. Despite being quick, she remains patient and waits for the play. The same can be said for her serve receive. She consistently was one of the top passers of the showcase.
Cynthia Ockerman, MH Brighton/Legacy
Ockerman is a 6’2” middle that has a very high ceiling, but she’s likely to be a Gamechanger very soon. Ockerman showed the ability to move well around the net and could finish with a lot of power from the middle or on the outside. She took well to her instruction and coaching as well, quickly able to apply what she was being taught to strengthen her performance.
Marlie Smith, S Clarkston/Legacy
Smith already shows the confidence and poise of an upperclassmen. She’s been able to establish herself as a clear Gamechanging setter right from the start. Her setting was consistent and accurate, bringing out the best swings of the day from many of her hitters. On top of that, she’s a very vocal and supportive leader on the floor.
Eleanor Williams, RS Romeo/Michigan Elite
Williams was just a steady player in all phases of the game. She really didn’t display any kind of weakness. Though being listed as a RS, her passing and defensive instincts were on point. Her attacks were powerful and tested the defense, while her serve had a nice pop as well. She’s got a great foundation to build on.
