Continue ReadingWith graduation, there are always big shoes to fill in the setter position. Either a new face needs to step in and take over or a former 6-2 setter is now in a 5-1. We have a good sense of the household names returning but today we look at some we expect to elevate their numbers in 2023.
Rebekah Slaughter Rebekah Slaughter 5'10" | S Shawnee Mission East | 2026 State KS – 2026 – Shawnee Mission East
In her freshman season, Slaughter took over the setting duties and led the team with 573 assists on the year. With two of their three kill leaders returning, expect her numbers to increase in 2023 with a season of varsity ball and a good club season complete.
Marly Burbach Marly Burbach 5'11" | S Blue Valley Northwest | 2025 State KS – 2025 – Blue Valley Northwest
Burbach was solid in her sophomore season helping Blue Valley Northwest to 24 wins on the season. She dished out just short of 600 assists on the year and should see those numbers higher this fall.
Audrey WIllis – 2025 – Olathe East
Willis has been consistent in her first two years in a two-setter system. Her assists numbers are identical in that time, showing 409 assists in 87 sets played. With their top three-point scorers back, expect her numbers to be stronger in her junior campaign.
Aleeya Cruz Aleeya Cruz 5'3" | S Garden City | 2025 KS – 2025 – Garden City
Cruz saw her first varsity action in 2022 and thrived immediately with 354 assists in the 6-2 system run by the Buffalos. With both of the setters returning, expect the same system and both of their numbers to jump.
Lexi Arwine – 2024 – Garden City
The top returning assists leader for Garden City, Arwine is the other setter running the offense with Cruz. She led the team with 463 assists and will look to get her team back over the 20-win mark in 2023.
Emily Hynes – 2025 – Wichita North
Hynes averaged just under 7 assists per set for Wichita North in her sophomore season, good for 377 assists. A young team in 2022, with a season under her belt we should expect her numbers to make a big jump this fall.
