The Houston Open 2023 will reunite 23 of the best programs in the area for two days of competition at the Houston Skyline club, on Friday and Saturday.
Prep Dig will be on-site following the first day of the event and will bring detailed reports and the best photos, but before the tournament starts, let’s get to know some of the most exciting talent that will be in action. These liberos will be as busy as it gets on the backcourt:
Mykayla McMillian Mykayla McMillian 5'3" | DS/L Episcopal | 2024 State TX
Mykayla McMillian Mykayla McMillian 5'3" | DS/L Episcopal | 2024 State TX
A defensive dynamo, McMillian does an excellent job of holding Episcopal’s defensive system together. She does that by communicating very well with her teammates, but also with her strong play, which sets the tone on the defensive side of the game. McMillian is incredibly quick with her movement and that allows her to get a lot of touches on defense. Her ball control is also excellent, which gives her the ability to cover a massive area in serve-receive and free up her pin hitters to focus on offense. The libero is also great at covering her hitters and setting in transition when she needs to.
Taylor Crain
Taylor Crain
A Baylor commit, Crain is the starting libero for her strong Lutheran South Academy team. She’s incredibly talented from a technical standpoint and combines that extremely well with a high volleyball IQ and a great understanding of the game. Her defensive skills are truly impressive, but her passing game is even better and it typically takes an incredible serve to get her to pass out of system. Crain is also extremely consistent and mentally strong, keeping her level of play steady regardless of the situation.
McPartland has been one of the most consistent defensive players in the area for a few years now and her presence on the backcourt makes her team Rosehill Christian significantly stronger. She has the entire package when it comes to being an elite libero as she can read the game well and anticipate plays, is very quick with her movement toward the ball and extremely technical with her contact. McPartland is a scrappy defender who will do whatever it takes to keep the ball off the floor and makes a major impact on the backcourt with her play.
Chloe Davis
Chloe Davis
The starting libero for St. John’s, Davis adds a lot of stability to the team with her game. She’s one of those defensive players who like to keep things as simple as possible, keeping her eyes on the ball at all times to anticipate plays instead of having to make acrobatic saves. Her ball control is excellent and she very rarely makes technical mistakes. Davis also plays with a lot of energy and has an important leadership role with the Mavericks.
Mari Mendiburu
Mari Mendiburu
The electric Mendiburu plays with a lot of energy on the backcourt and often has a smile on her face when she’s on the court. She’s always very active for St. Agnes Academy and gets a lot of touches on defense. Her passing is also always very consistent and accurate and keeps her team in system even when dealing with the toughest serves. Speaking of serving, Mendiburu is also very good from the service line herself, consistently getting opponents out of system and generating easy transition plays for the Tigers.
