From the first contact to the second contact. They’re the quarterbacks of volleyball. These are the players that run the offense and go criminally underrated, but they make or break a team.
Let’s take a look at the top returning setters in the 2023 season.
Emma Keeping Emma Keeping 5'11" | S Imlay City | 2026 State MI – Imlay City
Talk about an introduction. One of the top freshman in Michigan returns for another round with Imlay City. This player is a really intriguing piece. A setter by nature, her athleticism and strong south paw creates a great attacking option for Imlay City. While she began running a 6-2 while also hitting, towards the end of last season, Keeping was primarily seen swinging six rotations.
Makayla Bruman Makayla Bruman 5'10" | S Imlay City | 2026 State MI – Imlay City
It’s a rarity to have one impact freshman setter, but to have TWO is quite something. Alongside Keeping, Bruman made very quick time creating quite the name for herself last season. Starting off in a 6-2 offense, eventually Bruman took over the reigns as full-time setter for Imlay City. A move that nearly saw the Trojans on a deep post-season run.
Zoey Dood Zoey Dood 6'2" | S Grandville | 2024 State #131 Nation MI – Grandville (Virginia)
One of the top prospects of the 2024 class, this player has been a household name from an early age. Entering her senior season, I am sure Dood is going to be on a mission to leave some hardware behind at Grandville. A 6’3 lefty dynamo, Dood has her hands in about every cookie jar possible.
Sophie Crawford Sophie Crawford 6'1" | S Gull Lake | 2024 State MI – Gull Lake (Miami (OH))
Going down the list of top 2024 prospects, Sophie Crawford Sophie Crawford 6'1" | S Gull Lake | 2024 State MI has really came on strong in the last year or so. An underrated player in her early career, Crawford made her talent more than known last fall. Leading her squad to an unprecedented Division 1 Quarter-Final appearance, Crawford will be crucial in making the move to a semifinal appearance.
Taylor Smith Taylor Smith 6'1" | S Pewamo Westphalia | 2024 State MI – Pewamo-Westphalia (Eastern Michigan)
Next on board, we have a reigning Division 3 state champion and Division 3 MVP. Smith is the real deal. A setter can make or break a squad and Smith surely makes this team. Her tall 6’1 frame not only poses a great threat at the net for blocking and offense, but she uses her frame to bring great speed to her sets.
Grace Chisek – Watervliet
Onto another Division 3 standout, Chisek nearly led Watervliet to an appearance in Kellogg. While, maybe the most undersized of the group. Chisek brings a lot of athleticism and dynamic play to the court with her experience on the basketball courts. This could be a big year for Watervliet as they not only return Chisek but other key pieces too.
Ella Craggs Ella Craggs 5'9" | S Northville | 2025 State #127 Nation MI – Northville
Arguably one of the most impactful transfers to have happened in the last several years, Craggs’ introduction to Northville proved wonders for this program. Leading the Mustangs all the way to a Championship match, Craggs’ game proved steady and exactly what the doctor ordered.
Abby Pickard Abby Pickard 5'10" | S Lakewood | 2025 State MI – Lakewood
One of the top teams in all of Division 2. They wouldn’t be one of the top returners without one of the top returning setters. Pickard is coming off of a big sophomore season. After narrowly dropping out of the tournament in the Elite 8 last fall, she went on to set a National Championship winning team and a Top 5 Finishing team at AAU Nationals with FaR Out.
Campbell Flynn Campbell Flynn 6'2" | S Mercy | 2025 State #4 Nation MI – Mercy (Nebraska)
She may be one of the hottest players in the country right now. Campbell Flynn Campbell Flynn 6'2" | S Mercy | 2025 State #4 Nation MI has been cementing quite the name for herself early on in her career. A National champion and now a World Champion with the USA U19 National Team this summer. Flynn was also recently named to the U21 team that recently finished sixth at Worlds. Flynn will return with national team experience and could lead Mercy to an epic season.
Adrienne Greschaw Adrienne Greschaw 5'9" | S North Branch | 2024 State MI – North Branch
While a knee injury during club season may have sidelined Greschaw then. Look for her to be back at full health and running the offense for the reigning Division 2 State Champions this fall. Greschaw returns as not only a state champion, but an All-State selection from 2022.
Mya Kattula Mya Kattula 5'11" | S Notre Dame Prep | 2025 State MI – Notre Dame Prep
From one Division 2 power player to the next, this is very much the year of Mya Kattula Mya Kattula 5'11" | S Notre Dame Prep | 2025 State MI at Notre Dame Prep. While an All-State selection a season ago as a setter and right side, the lefty south paw could very easily be seen running the offense on her lonesome with the departure of Margo Sudzina (Central Oklahoma). A feat that hasn’t been done since NDP’s 2017 title run.
