It was my first look at Hempstead in ’23. I wrote a scouting report on City from last week’s match at Kennedy. With that being the case, I focused more on the Mustangs in this one.
Addison Wright
Addison Wright
Wright stood out early and often in this match. The six-rotation performer is listed on the team’s official roster as a OH/DS, which you don’t see a lot, but certainly defines her skill set. Her work in the back row kept the Mustangs competitive against City’s big hitters. She’s also an explosive athlete on the outside with an impressive vertical leap and huge swing. No doubt, she can play in college.
Luci Weber
Luci Weber
Consistency is the name of the game when it comes to setters. Putting the ball where your hitters like it when they’re ready makes for a successful player at the position. Weber fits that mold. She reads what’s unfolding on the court well and gets into position on time. She mixes up her deliveries to keep defenses guessing.
Emma Boge
Emma Boge
Boge provides a presence in the middle for the Mustangs. Her height is enhanced by her long arms and agility. She times her net defense well, altering plenty of shots in addition to blocking others. She posted 8.0 blocks through the team’s first four matches in ’23. She also entered this contest ranked second to Wright in kills, cementing her status as a solid two-way player.
Smith faced plenty of powerful hits sent her way by the Little Hawks Tuesday. She held up well against the pressure. She’s quick laterally and gets low with a sound base on serve-receive. Her passes are consistent and often keep Hempstead in system so it can take advantage of a talented front row.
Vivian Smith
Vivian Smith
Right side is among the toughest positions to fill on the court. When you see a good one, she stands out. Making Smith more impressive is her versatility beyond that spot. She balances the court as a threat at the right pin, but she holds up well in the back row and can hit outside or middle.
Hattie Galloway
Hattie Galloway
The revelation that is Hattie Galloway continues down the volleyball tracks like a speeding locomotive. The biggest difference I noticed while comparing her first varsity match last week to the one against Hempstead was her growing confidence. That’s trouble for opponents because the skills already are present. Galloway impressively combines natural gifts with an intense will to succeed. She’s piled up an amazing 38.0 blocks (23 solo) in five games, delivering 15.0 (10) in this one.
