Another exciting week of the 2023 MHSAA season is in the books.

Week 2 of the season continues to see a wide range of players making some waves around the state.

Here's a look at 10 players that made a name for themselves in the last week.

*Stats were provided through MaxPreps and Hudl

Ellianna Foley, Jr. S Coldwater

The junior setter for the Cardinals has Coldwater racking up some solid wins in 2023. She's running the offense well and has 131 assists over 23 sets, but her recognition this week comes for her serving ability. Foley has the most aces in the state right now with 34, averaging more than one a set. That included 13 in a single match this weekend.

[player_tooltip player_id='110298' first='Lea' last='Gage'], Sr. S/OH Brighton

Recently committed to Radford, Gage has Brighton as the eye-opening team in Division 1 right now. After a 2022 season full of injuries, Brighton is rolling with wins over some of the best in the state. Gage is doing her part to lead that charge. Her setter/outside combo ability is what makes her such a dangerous player. Her setting is allowing the Bulldogs to be fast, but balanced offense. But, her athleticism as an outside has her as a very consistent finisher and a challenging server.

[player_tooltip player_id='226900' first='Liv' last='Hosford'], So. OH Rockford

Rockford hasn't been shying away from competition and its largely been top teams in the state. The Rams have played 16 matches already in 2023, totaling 40 sets. That's a big workload, but it hasn't slowed down Hosford. Coming off a huge freshman year, Hosford has put up 141 kills, 119 digs and 17 blocks

[player_tooltip player_id='110314' first='Carissa' last='Musta'], Sr. MH Cadillac

[player_tooltip player_id='110314' first='Carissa' last='Musta']

It shouldn't be too surprising to see Musta make the list. She's been one of the most dominant hitters in the state from the middle position. Thus far in 2023, Musta is hitting .372 with 84 kills and 20 blocks through 19 recorded sets. Four of her nine matches have seen Musta record double-digit kills. It's a strong start for the middle.

[player_tooltip player_id='226910' first='Kayla' last='Ostrander'], So. DS/L Eisenhower

Ostrander has been a big asset to Eisenhower, which is off to an 8-2 start to the season. The sophomore is playing like a veteran libero with 141 digs through 24 sets of action. Ostrander recorded more than 20 digs in three matches this season and had 16 digs in a tough 3-set win over Anchor Bay this past week. Ostrander has also been making an impact with her serve, tallying 14 aces.

[player_tooltip player_id='454063' first='Miley' last='Southland'], So. S Three Rivers

Southland is off to a fast start to her sophomore season, looking like a potential breakout star in 2023. The Three Rivers setter recorded her 1,000th career assist recently and has the Wildcats off to a 12-3 record to open the year. Southland has 284 assists on the young season, with five matches with over 20 assists already.

[player_tooltip player_id='192444' first='Ashley' last='Strefling'], Sr. S River Valley

The winner of our Preseason D4 Player of the Year vote is making those who voted for her proud. She led River Vally to winning the Eau Claire Tournament this past weekend. The senior is in complete command of the floor for the Mustangs. She's got a great feel for the game and can quickly adjust to the play, as seen by some of her kills during the weekend.

Maddy Vaara, Sr. OH Ludington

Vaara is a player that doesn't get the attention she deserves as being one of the top hitters in the state. Her production has been great for Orioles for years. This season, Vaara already has 146 kills through 30 sets while hitting .362. This weekend, Vaara had 40 kills over three matches, hitting .583 or greater in each one. Vaara's defensive play has improved as well. She has 71 digs early in the year.

Annalise Weeder, Sr. S Croswell-Lexington

The Pioneers are off and running this fall with a great offensive attack. That's due in large part to the play of Weeder, the senior setter and an on-court leader. Weeder has 235 assists on the year and just surpassed her 2,500th career assist last week. Weeder is also a steady part of the defensive effort with 86 digs.

[player_tooltip player_id='110332' first='Avery' last='Weslow'], Sr. OH Forest Hills Central

While we will be looking to spread the love with this feature, it's hard to ignore Weslow this weekend. The senior outside recorded her 1,000th career kill and 1,000th career dig on the same day. Weslow has been carrying the FHC offense early in the year, with over 50 percent of the team's kills.
