Teams from all over the state played multiple matches on Saturday, with some eye-opening results. Here are five athletes from five different schools that topped the state in number of kills on Saturday.
’24 Tatum Wade, 5-11 OH, South Central
Going 4-0 on opening day is tough to do. The Satellites, led by Miss Wade, did just that against Twin Lakes, North Newton, West Central and volleyball power North Judson-San Pierre. Tatum is a primary passing outside who finished the day with 44 kills and 20 digs, all while hitting .500 in the four matches combined.
’24 Leigh Carnes Leigh Carnes 5'8" | OH Springs Valley | 2024 State IN , 5-10 S/RS, Springs Valley
The second team all-state honoree did what she does—hit in the front row and set out of the back row. If she were a primary attacker like Tatum, she might have twice as many kills as the 42 she finished with on the day. Plus, the competition was a bit tougher; SV finished 2-1 on Saturday, with the lone blemish being against 3A reigning state champ Providence.
’24 Katie Kopshever Katie Kopshever 5'11" | OH Castle | 2024 State IN , 5-11 OH, Castle
This hammer from the Evansville area also went 2-1 on Saturday, taking the first set off of Providence before losing in four to the defending state 3A champ. A big, strong and smart athlete, Katie finished Saturday with 41 kills against high-end competition.
’25 Bryn Vanvleet Bryn Vanvleet 5'10" | OH Seton Catholic | 2025 State IN , 5-10 MB, Seton Catholic
Speaking of hammers, Bryn finished with 33 kills in two matches, with 24 of them coming in a sweep of International. She looks to be the focal point of the Cardinal offense, and also steps in as a primary passer.
’24 Emalee Maesch Emalee Maesch 5'8" | OH La Porte | 2024 State IN , 5-7 OH/DS, LaPorte
An impressive start for the Slicers on Saturday, sweeping volleyball powers Penn and Bishop Dwenger. Emalee finished with 16 kills and 9 digs in each match, averaging just over five per set. She does project to being a defender at the next level, but her springy jump and whip of an armswing proves she can be a threat in the front row too.
