They are a hidden gem in the upper Mojave Desert. Coached by Stephanie Phillips and Gary Beckstrom, Burroughs has a current record of 24-3 overall and a 6-2 record in their Mojave River League Conference. Even though their location is somewhat isolated, PrepDig enjoys finding and recognizing the hidden gems. Below are four players who deserve some recognition in the game.
Kori Phillips
Kori Phillips
Kori Phillips uses her high reach and snap of the wrist to create power behind her attacks. She is an all-around 6-rotation player who helps her team on offense and defense. Phillips passes, digs, and can bump set in the back row. In the front row, she can attack and block at the net. Phillips is currently ranked #8 in Division 5 and #2 in the Mojave River League for hitting with 218 kills.
Natalie Ponce
Natalie Ponce
Captain Natalie Ponce has no fear of getting down on the court floor, diving and sliding to get a dig or save a ball. She covers her pin hitters and is ready for tips or tooled blocks. If she doesn’t get the first touch, she is ready to bump set the second touch, keeping the ball in play. Ponce is quick and goes after every ball. She has a solid platform that picks up on hard attacks and controls her passes. Ponce is currently #2 in Division 5 and #1 in the Mojave River League for digs. She currently has 312.
Kayla Santiago
Kayla Santiago
Kayla Santiago knows just how to spread the ball around allowing her front row to get touches. She has a nice backset that finds its target on right side. Her short sets in middle made it easy to score. Santiago has a smooth push out to outside, finding the perfect location. She has the speed to get to and under the ball to turn a play and keep her offense running. She is currently ranked the # 2 setter in Division 5 and the #1 setter in the Mojave River League with 558 assists.
Lexi Higer
Lexi Higer
Lexi Higer celebrates her blocks with a flex motion that hypes the crowd up. Although not the typical height for a middle, Higer is proof that height doesn’t matter when you have other skills and talent that compensate. She laterals side to side to help her pins protect the net. She gets on top of the short sets in the middle and hits it down. She is currently ranked #8 in Division 5 and # 5 in the Mojave River League for blocks. She has 42.
