Continue ReadingWith a 100-9 record from 2019-2022, Calvert has been a major factor among the Ohio high school volleyball landscape for a good while. This 2023 season is no different. At 18-1 overall, they are once again experienced and poised to make a deep postseason run. Having swept through every opponent up until last week, Calvert took on two big programs with their most recent match resulting in their first lost of the season, a 3-1 outcome to Ohio power Magnificat, ranked #11 in the most recent Division I Ohio poll. Just prior to this loss they beat a solid St. Ursula (Toledo) team 3-2, ranked #18 in Division I. Calvert, 13-0 in Sandusky-Bay league play, is ranked #3 in Ohio’s recently released DIV poll. Having claimed the 2020 DIV state crown to conclude an unbeaten season at 29-0, Calvert looks to return to the final weekend in the coming weeks and earn another title on the effort of some key veterans. Here are some of their primary prospects.
Caroline Lanicek

Lanicek has been producing offensively in a very consistent manner since her first season, which included earning 12 kills on a .407 efficiency to go along with seven blocks to help Calvert claim the DIV state title in her freshman year. The Hillsdale commit is this team’s biggest offensive threat at 3.4 k/s in 2023. She is very effective as she is terminating at a career best .464 efficiency and at a 53% rate. She also offers a career best 3.2 blocks per frame. At 6’0, the lefty middle has been giving opponents fits in trying to defend her length and arm as she provides great physical presence at the net. Just shy of 950 kills for her career, she has a four-year efficiency of .411 and a total of 290 blocks to date.

The second of two prospects that earned significant time during Calvert’s state championship season and since, Shook is a key pillar for their effort in a variety of attacking phases. With just over 750 career kills she earns her points through multiple attack points in the middle and at both pins. She has a big left arm and controls her power and range with good precision to keep defenses off balance. Shook as a career average of 2.4 k/s with a 157 career blocks. She had a season best 14 kills in their recent win over DI SUA.
Emily Miller
Miller, a 5’8 sophomore, has been the third piece to their primary offensive trio and is likely to assume a bigger role once her veteran teammates graduate after this season, which we are getting a good glimpse at what that will entail. She provides 2.2 k/s through an aggressive arm at both pins, although the left side is where she can do a lot of damage with a fundamental swing in the air. Their most recent match is a signal of things to come from her as she had a season best 14 kills against one of Ohio’s best Division I teams in Magnificat.
Cecilia Palm
The 5’3 senior libero leads Calvert defensively from the back row with a team best 11.5 digs per match. She is playing some of her best ball as of late as she provided a season high 25 digs in their recent win over SUA followed by another double-digit effort with 16 digs versus Magnificat. Palm patrols the back row with intention and engagement that creates a lot of quality transition opportunities for their big arms. She has good read and reaction to the ball and can control the dig well in all directions as she uses quick movement in her footwork while creating a fluid platform finish.

Miller is the team’s leading distributor as the 5’6 senior provides nearly eight assists per set. She provides a veteran presence on the court that helps to stabilize their defense and provide good direction of their offense through their key arms. Her athleticism at the net can make it difficult to read her hands and distribution. This is evidenced by the 1,240 assists she has earned primarily over the most recent two seasons.
