They played a great game hosted at Cerritos College in Cerritos California on Saturday, November 4, 2023. Coached by Mike Murphy and Andrea Coury, the Lady Lions showed up and defeated the Orange Lutheran Lancers. J Serra took care of business by winning in three sets, with scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-17. This is their first ever CIF-SS title and they will be going to regional playoffs. Their next game is at home on November 7th at 6 p.m. against Edison High School. Charlotte Nowak Charlotte Nowak 6’0″ | OH JSerra | 2026 State CA gets high in the air, attacking or tipping to score. Her blocking was crucial being the primary blocker for the opposing teams outside hitter when she was at the net. She would get touches on the ball to slow it down. Nowak was always ready for a set with her quick approach and fast arm swing.

Emma Champagne Emma Champagne 5’11” | MB St. Sierra | 2026 State CA was a beast in middle. She killed overpasses with perfect timing to bang the ball right back down. The power behind her hit on a short, quick set was at times unstoppable. Champagne uses her high hands to penetrate the net and her quick lateral movements get her into position to help out her pins.
Jessica Bates Jessica Bates 5’11” | S JSerra | 2024 State CA hands were on fire. Most of her sets were on target, utilizing her hitters. She was quick to the ball getting right underneath to provide a perfect set. She ran her offense with leadership and communicative skills. Her short, quick sets to middle produced points. She also played right-side scoring and blocking.

Katherine Nowak Katherine Nowak 5'10" | OH Jserra | 2027 CA
Katherine Nowak Katherine Nowak 5’10” | OH Jserra | 2027 CA stepped into her hitter role as a freshman on varsity and left her mark in the game. She was fierce at the net and her confidence was at an all-time high. She was attacking the ball with strength and power, getting between blocks and scoring. She is an all-around 6-rotation player providing good defense in the back row.

Payton Mossbarger
Payton Mossbarger handled her position responsibly, diving and digging for balls to save plays. The volleyball offense starts with one good pass, which Mossbarger is very capable of doing. Her speed and quickness helped her get to balls that were shanked attacks. She covered her hitters and picked up tips.
Reese Brown
Reese Brown
Reese Brown is a strong outside hitter. She knows how to adjust in the air to place a ball in the best location to score. She has a quick reaction which helps with defending attacks. If blocked at the net, Brown would adjust her hit on the next set to get it through or over the block.

Sara Moynihan Sara Moynihan 5’9″ | S Jserra | 2026 State CA is a lefty setter, right-side hitter. The appearance of her pushing the ball with her fingertips made her sets look effortless. She was ready behind right-side to recover attacks. Moynihan was vocal on the court calling for help if she needed it. She also knew when to switch from a two handed-set to a bump set if the pass was off.
Tatum Johnson Tatum Johnson 6’0″ | MB JSerra | 2024 State CA was the first line of defense in the middle, transitioning side to side to help with the block. Her high hands penetrated the net creating some straight down to the ground blocks at the net. She capitalized on the quick sets to middle, sometimes getting the attack before the opponent could get into full position. Johnson is one of the quicker middles who can run a slide and score.
