In arguably one of the most complete performances on the weekend, throughout the divisions, this player could do it all.
This player’s ability to take charge anywhere on the court was impressive to say the least. At the net and anywhere throughout the back court, she was always a viable weapon. While in the back court, there were times she was covering over half of the court defensively. She was simply everywhere.
After going on an exciting run last year, including a 5 set barn burner in the semifinals, Kalamazoo Christian’s fire was put out in the finals. Seemingly no match for the 2022 champs, this post-season looked a whole lot different. There were no signs of the defending state champions in Kellogg. That was a hurdle already cleared by the Comets in the Elite 8. Taking out Pewamo-Westphalia on practically their home court, KC swept the 2022 champs in style with scores of 25-13, -14, and -23. After this hurdle, the rest of the race seemed crystal clear.
Holland DeVries Holland DeVries 5'10" | OH Kalamazoo Christian | 2024 State MI was the difference maker throughout it all.
In the opening rounds of the Division iII Final Four, the entire community was expecting a brawl for the ages. As it was set up as No. 1 versus No. 4. Needless to say, we were out a lot quicker than anticipated. This match took just a little over an hour to complete. DeVries and company made quick work, similarly to their Elite 8 match, over the No. 1 ranked team, SMCC. DeVries knocked down 12 kills in the sweep hitting over .320. Defensively, nothing fell on her watch, leading all players with 20 digs.
Fast forward to Saturday, it would look like the magic from these Comets had run its course. After starting set 1 with a 10 point deficit early, they would go on to pull off the comeback, winning 26-24. They would go on to do similar play in the second. An early 10 point deficit, this time, they couldn’t strike twice. Regardless of the up and down opening sets, one result remained the same.
Not only would Kalamazoo Christian go on to win their first ever title in school history, but DeVries would be the leading force from the jump. She would even go on to clinch the championship point. In an extra set, DeVries put down 16 kills while picking up 27 digs in the four set match. An absolute wild performance from the senior leader.
Kalamazoo Christian would go on to finish the season 41-6-3.
Congratulations Holland on an amazing season and leading your program to their first ever state championship in program history!
