Also, each of those players is jacked and looks like they could play linebacker for college flag football teams. It also did not help that all of them decided to wear matching pigtails on Saturday.
One of the three matches I scouted in Olathe at the Winter Warmup Challenge on December 9 was the Challenge’s two-set victory over True North 15-1 in Pool B action, and it was the most enjoyable one to scout.
Cayten Cummings Cayten Cummings 5'9" | OH Yates Center | 2027 State KS , 5’9”, MH, Yates Center, ‘27
Cummings is one of a handful of talented front-row players on the KC Challenge 15-1 roster. Her serve was firing on all cylinders in the win over True North. She was very accurate and hit the called service zones. She had six aces in the first set in the win. She also had three kills and two digs. Cummings will benefit greatly from playing with this talented club team. She already looks like a more confident player than when I saw her play last summer at the Pittsburg State Team Camp.
Avery Gallagher Avery Gallagher 5'10" | MB Spring Hill | 2027 State KS , 5’10”, MH/RS, Spring Hill, ‘27
Gallagher was one of the first Challenge players that caught my eye. I have used this comparison before but Gallagher has shoulders like WWE superstars Rhea Ripley or Raquel Rodriguez. She is jacked and can crush a volleyball. She has a big reach and a nice vertical jump. She had a quiet first set against True North, but in the second set, she had three kills and one block. Spring Hill is one of the top high school programs in Kansas and produces winning volleyball players. She reminds me of Spring Hill alum and current Kansas Wesleyan star Rylee Serpan.
Mia Huber Mia Huber 5'10" | MB Olathe West | 2027 State KS , 5’10”, MH/OH, Olathe West, ‘27
Huber is another front-row beast for the Challenge’s 15-1 team. She finished with four kills, three serve receptions, and three aces. She arguably might be the quickest of the Challenge’s kill monsters and will be a solid player for the Olathe West Owls. When she drops the hammer on a ball, she does it swinging a sledgehammer.
Kaliyah Norman-Smith, 5’8”, OH/MH, Spring Hill, ‘27
Norman-Smith was the biggest surprise on the day. She has a compact physical frame but moves with cat-like quickness. She hustles and makes consistent first passes. Norman-Smith filled up her stat sheet with four kills, three digs, and four serve receptions.
