Last Saturday, the British International School of Houston welcomed one of them, the Star Sports Center #5, hosted by the Houston Stars club. The tournament featured 22 teams from the 16s, 17s and 18s age groups, which competed in a single division.
It was a great opportunity to take a look at some players who don’t always take part in the major events we get to attend and there were some interesting findings made during the day. These middles made a major impact at the net:
Warner Stahlbaum
Warner Stahlbaum
Stahlbaum’s presence in the middle helped Houston Skyline 17 Black win the tournament with six victories and no sets dropped. She used her length extremely well at the net and helped the team offensively and defensively. Few middles in the field were able to match Stahlbaum’s high contact point when hitting and that made of her a very productive offensive player – she also displayed interesting firepower, swinging hard on some occasions. Because of her long arms and her mobility, the middle also made an impact with her blocking. Stahlbaum also had good moments at the service line with her floater.
Claudia Deuel
Claudia Deuel
Deuel was one of the key players in her Katy United 17 Molten team that made a surprising run to the final, finishing second with five wins and one loss. It’s truly impressive what she’s able to do in the middle while standing at just 5’5″ and battling much taller players. Deuel gets off the floor very well, but, more than that, she reads the game perfectly, timing well her jumps. She hits a very set down the middle and is very quick to get to the pins when blocking.
Chesney McCullough

McCullough made a strong impression playing with her team The Woodlands Skyline 16 Black, which finished third with four wins and one loss. Her offensive game was very strong and that made the middle be set quite often, playing a major role in their offense. McCullough displayed great power with her swings, getting off the floor well and hitting the ball with tremendous power. She also showed an interesting ability to hit around the block and find nice angles with her swings.
Sterling Lindamood

Lindamood was arguably the best player in her TX Hurricanes 17 CAT 5 team that was fifth with two wins and two losses. I don’t think any other middle in the entire event had such a big offensive role with their teams and she lived up to the expectations, having great success in her swings. Lindamood made a strong offensive approach, got off the floor well and hit the ball hard every time. She also had a good blocking presence, moving well at the net and getting to the pins on time.
Ziya Sista

Sista and her Houston Skyline 16 Black team got a third-place finish in the event, having won four of their five matches during the day. The middle impressed with her length and with how well she managed to use it at the net. She made contact with the ball at a very high point offensively and displayed great speed in her right arm, putting it down with power. Sista also made a big impact defensively, with great attention to handling overpasses and good mobility to make stops above the net.
Madeline Harris
Madeline Harris
Despite dropping both matches with her team Houston Stars 16 Adidas to finish 13th, Harris displayed great potential. A very long and athletic player, she held her own at the net and battled some of the best middles in the event. Harris has a big block and moves well at the net, quickly getting to the pins. Her offense is also well-developed as she makes contact with the ball at a very high point and has impressive power in her right – she also showed she can hit from the left. Harris is a very strong server too, hitting the ball with power and precision from the service line.
