No better way to cap off the month of March than in Atlanta for the Big South Qualifier.
The 17 Open shaped up to be a really nice finish for several teams. With the final four including an already qualified OTVA Tampa squad, this meant regardless of the results, the rest of the field would earn a bid. Nonetheless, OT Tampa came here to dominate and do nothing less as they would go the entire weekend without dropping a single set. Yes, a perfect 20-0 set weekend in Atlanta.
The other teams who will join Tampa in Vegas down the road in July are OTVA Orlando, Triangle and CUVC. CUVC came awfully close to qualifying in Indianapolis, after a stellar weekend at Big South, this team is surely onto something dangerous.
From all these teams, let’s breakdown who were the big stars of the weekend. Here is the Big South Dream Team in the 17 Open division.
MVP: Izzy Mogidge – OTVA Tampa
A team just doesn’t go 20-0 in sets for nothing. Izzy Mogridge was on point from start to finish here in Atlanta! The future Oregon Duck is grooving really well right now and her team is reaping the benefits! Against sister team OT Orlando in the finals, Mogridge was getting her attackers in such great spots, Orlando couldn’t keep up.
OH: Maggie Dostic – OTVA Tampa
One of the big weapons this team, Maggie Dostic is going to be a real treat for the Tennessee Volunteers in a few years. A six rotation dynamo, Dostic is such an effective scorer but also manages to keep her team balanced with her first touch. She allows this team to do a lot of special things with her all-around game.
OH: Brooke McCall – CUVC
Brooke McCall is having herself a season in 2024! After a really exciting MEQ, McCall came to Big South on a mission! From Day one to Day three, she was giving it her all. CUVC relies a ton on McCall for her scoring ways. She delivered more than enough in Atlanta.
MB: Lindley Miller – Triangle
While not necessarily seen in the middle this weekend, Lindsey Miller was easily one of the top middles in the field of 17s. An incredible blocker, it was the slide play of Miller that had teams in complete shambles! She’s so terminal off of one foot and she’s so relied upon. Triangle couldn’t give her the ball enough!
MB: Kaylee Peper – OTVA Tampa
OT Tampa is a stacked juggernaut. In the middle with Kaylee Peper, she does so many things well. An imposing blocker and quick shoot out offensively, Peper opens so many things up for Tampa. Mogridge was finding her extremely well towards the stretch of championship run.
OPP: Kiersten Bevelle – OTVA Orlando
This was a shining star for OTVA Orlando from start to finish. Kiersten Bevelle steps onto the court and puts on a show. So explosive off of the ground, Bevelle puts herself in such a stratosphere that at her apex, opposing blockers can’t compete. On the left side or the opposite, she gets the job done extremely well.
L: Lily Hayes – OTVA Tampa
Who else would you want as your libero for a dream team? I’m taking this future Florida Gator. A demanding presence on the court, Lily Hayes just has the magic touch. Everything she touched, particularly in the final home stretch on Sunday, seemingly turned to gold.
Honorable Mention:
- Addie Canady, Triangle
- Raegan Richardson, AZ Sky
- Elena Maynulet, GP Rox
- Camryn Jeffrey, A5
- BreAnna McMillian; Triangle
- Jumana Martin, CUVC
