Here is the first of three reports on prospects who played in that event.
This report focuses on five athletes who displayed defensive savvy in those four matches.
Brynn McGillicudy, 5’4”, S, Mill Valley, ’25 ( Pohaku 17-1)
McGillicudy did not quite make the All-Deck team from the Power League action, but she had a solid day setting and digging. This was the first time I watched the Pohaku team play. The Mill Valley prospect finished with 13 assists and five digs. She is a quick player with an infectious positive attitude on the court. She is for certain the emotional leader of the Pohaku Club.
Reese Daughtery, 5’3”, DS/L, Bishop Carroll, ’25 (KS Networks 17-1)
Daughtery had one of the better matches that I have seen her play. She racked up seven digs and six serve receptions in Showtime’s two-set victory over Alpha & Omega 17-1 a squad out of Columbia, Missouri. The Bishop Carroll prospect also has a nice serve and finished with an ace in the win. She communicated well with her teammates and helped her team survive a tough match against the well-coached team from Columbia.
Harper Dye Harper Dye 5'6" | OH Lawrence | 2025 State KS , 5’7”, DS/RS, Lawrence, ’25 (Topeka Saints 17-1)
The Topeka Saints have three defensive specialists who share time and all have similar skills. Dye played more in this match than she did the first time I scouted the 17U Power League play back in February. She had three digs and two serve receptions in the Saints’ loss to Dynasty 17-2.
Kinley Willhelm, 5’8”, DS/L, Seaman, ’25 (Topeka Saints 17-1)
Willhelm wore the libero jersey for this match and she continues to have a solid club season. She is the tallest of the three defensive players for the Saints and perhaps the quickest. The Lawrence prospect finished with seven digs and five serve receptions in the match I scouted.
Myiah Soderberg Myiah Soderberg 5'3" | DS/L Washburn Rural | 2025 State KS , 5’5”, DS, Washburn Rural, ’25 (Topeka Saints 17-1)
Soderberg stepped her game up in the second set of the match I scouted essentially taking Dye’s playing time. She finished with four digs and two kills. I would like to see her improve her defensive frame by making a small adjustment by lowering her hip placement, which could give her a little better balance. All three Saints’ defensive players could help NAIA and JUCO programs after high school.
