I love this event because of all of the special talent that comes from all over the nation to win that elusive bid to USAV Junior Nationals. Day one was off to a great start with some intriguing match ups. I spent a majority of the day in the Open level courts and here are some players who stood out to me due to their individual performances.
Megan Hodges Megan Hodges 6'4" | MB Ladera Ranch Middle School | 2028 CA [2028] 6-4 Middle(Club: Tstreet/Verbal: Uncommitted)
I am not sure if there was a more dominant middle that I watched in the gym on Saturday. When it comes to volleyball, it is a true team sport. This means that a team truly does need all players in order to play well. One person cannot pass to themselves, set to themselves and then hit their own ball. However, not only is Megan the tallest and most intimidating player on her squad, but she has the game to back it up. Opposing coaches have to game plan around her and know exactly where she is at all times if they want a chance to win. Her footwork is the key component to her attacking. She is the perfect example of how to create momentum with your approach and use it to add power to her attack. I love how she is able to drive her arm down with a lot of force to generate hitting power also. She wowed me with her performance. Excited to watch the rest of her tournament.
Jordan Valentine Jordan Valentine 6'0" | OH Grapevine | 2026 State TX [2026] 6-0 Outside (HS: Grapevine/Club: 1United /Verbal: Uncommitted)
I stopped by their court to watch some players that are on our watch list and state rankings. What I saw when I got there was very surprising. Miss Valentine caught my eye from warm ups and I opened my phone to take copious notes about her game. She was not on my radar until then but now will be added to our official watch list for sure. Jordan does such a great job exuding confidence in everything that she does. If the game is not going well, you cannot see it in her posture, facial expressions or her actions on the court. When the game got a little tight, you could tell that she really wanted the ball to come to her in serve receive and also when attacking. I loved how she aimed the ball to many location with her attack. Her ability to play six rotations will garner a lot of attention by many scouts. This young lady will turn some heads and is able to play at the next level. I strongly encourage all college coaches reading this to give her a look.
Carly Paugh Carly Paugh 6'2" | MB Willis | 2025 State TX [2025] 6-2 Outside/Middle (HS: Willis/Club: TAV Houston /Verbal: Uncommitted)
It is very nice to see how Miss Paugh’s game has advanced as she has been playing on the pins in high school and now for club as well. As I sat and watched, what stood out to me is her ability to adapt to any set location and tempo. Carly did a great job of adjusting her footwork to the set and not losing any power on the attack. She looked very comfortable swinging on both pins during serve receive and defensive transition. It was fun to see her play a different position than what I was accustomed to seeing her play. She plays the game with such awesome emotion and unleashes it when anyone on her squad does well. Miss Paugh unleashed some heat on a few outside swings that made everyone shake their heads in excitement. She is a big reason why they went undefeated on day one and have a legit shot to earn a bid to Nationals. Stay tuned for more.
