Nebraska 15s Teams Off to Hot Start in Las Vegas

Nebraska's 15s contenders are already heating up in Vegas--and yes, we're aware that it's really, really hot in Vegas.

Puns aside, Wave 2 is already bringing the same tension and tight margins we saw with the previous group. We'll be honing in on the 15s for our live coverage, which features a long list of Great Plains contenders. Get dialed in for this one.

This feature serves as a reminder of all the Nebraska teams in the GJNC hunt, along with an overview of how Day 1 panned out.

The Open Openers

Our immediate attention goes to the trio of Nebraska squads in the 15 Open race.

Premier Nebraska 15 Gold and [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] 15 Elite have been in lockstep since the Wave 2 schedule dropped. Both were seeded as the No. 2 team in their six-team pools, and each has tabbed a strong 2-1 performance after Day 1.

Of course, this wasn't an easy journey. 15 Gold weathered a wild, up-and-down Monday that began with a hotly contested match against Arizona Sky. A deuce first set went to Premier Nebraska before AZ Sky rallied to force a tiebreaker. A clutch performance in Set 3 gave the Great Plains squad an important early victory, but the grind was just starting.

Rockwood Thunder edged past 15 Gold in three sets, dealing an early dose of adversity to Premier Nebraska. However, the day's final match revealed 15 Gold's resilience in a clean sweep over Paramount. Every team in Premier Nebraska's group landed at 2-1 or 1-2, so the entire hierarchy is wide open heading into Tuesday. Ramp the pressure back up.

Meanwhile, VCN 15 Elite followed a similar pattern: win, loss, win. The early 'W' came via a back-and-forth three-set thriller against 1st Alliance. This match delivered all the high-level volleyball you'd expect from a Great Plains-Great Lakes clash, including long rallies with incredible ball control. A 15-9 tiebreaker got the job done for 15 Elite.

Houston Skyline narrowly defeated [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] with the final set ending in a 30-28 result. But, like Premier Nebraska, VCN responded well by sweeping Peak to close out a 2-1 start. 15 Elite is positioned well with a pair of teams sitting at 0-3 in the pool.

We're also keeping an eye on Nebraska Elite 15 Revolution, which still has an avenue to the next round despite three tough opening matches. 15s are always unpredictable, so don't count out the NLQ champs.

https://x.com/KingsleyATK/status/1777066353964281917

https://x.com/KingsleyATK/status/1777325633367933007

Across the Board

Many more team shoutouts are warranted after opening day.

Premier Nebraska 15 Red has to be high on that list. The 15 Freedom division only played two Day 1 contests, but 15 Red quickly established its contender status with a pair of sweeps. Best of all, Premier Nebraska emerged as the only undefeated team in its six-squad pool after this doubleheader round. Results are all over the place, but this is an early advantage for 15 Red.

Similarly, [program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] 15 Black made quick work of its two debut matches in the 15 Liberty race. Two straight-set wins established 15 Black's frontrunner status as the No. 2 seed in its pool. We're already looking forward to Tuesday's meeting between VCN and Top Notch, the pool's top seed with its own unblemished record.

What an eventful opening night for Premier Nebraska 15 Black. The NLQ champions swiped the fourth-overall seed in 15 USA but faced early upset bids from its pool competitors. Fortunately, 15 Black atoned for its three-set loss to TAV with a dramatic tiebreaker victory over M2. Day 2 could shake up the leaderboard quickly.

Lastly, we'll be looking for a comeback bid out of South Central NE 15 Black in the 15 American division. Massive eight-team pools open up opportunities to rally from early losses, so we're ready to see this small-town crew dial it in for the next wave of contests.
