The Cincinnati Youth Volleyball Club Surge squad has made sound contributions in the volleyball hotbed of the Queen City. This year's two 17-and-under squads promise to deliver a lot of excitement.

Black

Things start with first passes on this team and East Central sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='445954' first='Mckenzie' last='Schoenfelder'] does that well. Lakota East junior Kylie Ertel hopes to help there as well.

Two nice setters take it from there in Oak Hills junior Emily Hoog and Little Miami junior Sam Hunter. Hunter had 210 assists and 105 digs for Little Miami this past year.

The team is loaded with hitters. East Central junior Ava Schneider will hit from the middle and the pins. Edgewood junior [player_tooltip player_id='742364' first='Railynn' last='Bowman'] along with East Central junior Eva Steinmetz will hit from the outside or play defensive specialist. Roger Bacon junior [player_tooltip player_id='741468' first='Morgan' last='Sunderman'], Edgewood junior Kaylee Barker and Seton 6-0 junior Allison Muldoon give the team size in the middle.

T'Keyah Grier is the head coach of the team. The squad sees its first action over the weekend in the Nike Classic in the Columbus Convention Center.

Blue

This team has a number of up and coming players on the roster such as Wyoming junior libero [player_tooltip player_id='741754' first='Katie' last='Mouch']. Lebanon junior [player_tooltip player_id='733261' first='Lacey' last='Davis'] is the other listed libero/defensive specialist for the team.

Three players could set in Princeton sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='757880' first='Trysta' last='Leach'], Cincinnati Christian junior Anna Bowling or East Central junior Kyle Kelsey. Kelsey could also hit from the pins.

Five players are looking to make big kills for the team. They are Ross junior right side and middle hitter Emma Scheffler along with Seton sophomore pin hitter [player_tooltip player_id='789011' first='Riley' last='Beckenhaupt'] and Oak Hills junior pin hitter Ashlyn Huber. Wyoming junior Libby Williams will hit from the middle or the pins and Seton sophomore Addison Downing will hit from the pins or play defensive specialist.

Derrik Gouveia is the head coach. The squad first plays in the Ohio Valley Region President's Cup in the Columbus Convention Center on Feb. 15 and 16.

Schoenfelder gives the Trojans solid play in the back as the libero. Schoenfelder dives goes hard after balls all the time. She makes big saves on dives and consistently puts her body in position to make sound two to three-point passes. Schoenfelder had 186 digs for East Central this past fall.

Hoog has demonstrated the desire to be a sound all-around player. Hoog is constantly in sync with her teammates setting the ball. Then defensively, Hoog squares her arms up well to make crisp passes. She's also a sound server. Hoog had 750 assists to lead the Greater Miami Conference, 53 aces and 193 digs helping Oak Hills go 17-7 and finish Division I district runner-up.

Sunderman (pictured) is a force in the middle and played a role in Roger Bacon's run to the Division IV state championship. Sunderman hits the ball a variety of places including a nice slide kill. She uses her size to hit balls over blockers. Sunderman also does a great job putting up blocks at the net. Sunderman had 130 kills and finished tied for third in the Miami Valley Conference with 42 blocks, helping the Spartans go 25-4 on the season.

Princeton may have struggled last fall, but Leach's return should help the Vikings move up the Greater Miami Conference standings. Leach has made an impact for Princeton ever since hitting high school. She puts balls on target constantly as the setter. Then she hustles on defense trying to keep balls alive. She had 313 assists and 196 digs for Princeton this past fall.

Mouch is a sound libero for the Cowboys, constantly lining up her body in position to make crisp passes. Mouch studies the tendencies of opposing hitters and does what she can to take away the strengths. Mouch finished fourth in the Cincinnati Hills League with 265 digs to go with 46 aces for the Cowboys this past fall.
