Appropriately named as it is windy and snowing outside as I write this, the Frostbite Festival Tournament kicked off in Rochester, MN today. Teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa all made the trek to showcase their skills. While the tournament is still underway, below are a few of my faves from day 1.

Henrikson stood out to me right away due to her versatility and power. Not only is she a dynamic hitter on the right side with multiple shots, but is also a quick and efficient setter. Henrikson is also a very smart player, makes very few errors, and is a leader in many ways on this Hammerhead team.

Dahl plays on the 15-1s for SMV but they were playing up in the 16s division. There are some big hitters on that team for their age, but they can't do it without an effective setter and Dahl delivered. She repeatedly dished out assist after assist. She has good footwork, good setter hands, and moves quickly in transition. I also love that she ins't afraid to take it over on 2 and score points herself.

Schroht was fun to watch. You can tell she has been setting for a while as not only does she have solid setter mechanics, but she has a high volleyball IQ. She has great communication with her hitters and a good understanding of what they need out of her. She also moves the ball around well and has the ability to isolate her attackers to put them in the best position to score.

Lilly is a solid 6 rotation player. There probably is not much I can say about her that probably has not already been said. She is powerful, explosive, has great hops, and definitely knows how to terminate. While all that is fun to watch, she does a lot of little things really well (like covering and digging) that get over shadowed by her attacking but are equally important to the success of the team.

Iowa Heart 17s is a solid team that went undefeated on the day. Part of that was due to their defense and the work of their libero, Taylor Sample. Taylor is a super quick and scrappy libero. She was always hustling and had really good energy on the court. She did really well on covering, digging, and went on some good serving runs for her team.
